The them in the story would be don't give up because when bil,ly was struggling he would keep trying and not give up. When he was picking blackberries with.

Billy had to try to earn enough money so he could get the dogs that he would hope to be his. IN page number 25 to earn the money he had to walk barefoot in the fields to pick blue berier so he can earn the money for the dogs. When the gang came he did not give up he was not scared he did not give up and leave or run.he knew that he could get the dogs and he did not give up for his dogs even if know one wanted the dogs billy did.
