Racism has been around for a long time. People judge others on the colour of their skin. This has affected a lot of people over the years. These three texts convey the theme of racism very strongly. The first text we studied was called remember the titans this is a story about a football team in an integrated school. The next text was called Changes, in this rap Tupac conveys his point that nothing is changing and how racism is affecting him. The final text is 12 Years A Slave. This is a story about how the main character Solomon was taken into slavery. The four authors of these texts are Boaz Yakin, Tupac Shakur and Steve McQueen. The first aspect I'm analysing is the characters that stand up to racism. The next aspect is the characters that are sympathetic to the struggle of African-Americans. The last aspect is settings where it is difficult to rise above racism.
In all of the texts we have studied there has been at least one character that has stood up to racism. In the first text Remember the Titans the character that stands up to racism is Coach Herman Boone. In the film Boone has to win all of the games to keep his job. He decides to stand up to the task and prepares to win every game. Despite all the odds Boone continues to fight racism and manages to win all the games. This meant he could keep his

One of the most prevalent topics in To Kill A Mockingbird is the town of Maycomb 's underlying racism and prejudice. The book shows that racism is very existent in the world around us, and can be seen in many different ways. In Martin Luther King Jr 's Letter from Birmingham Jail, Mr. King speaks of the inequalities and repercussions of being African American. Maya Angelou 's Graduation tells a similar story of Ms. Angelou being faced with inequalities at her high school graduation. All of these events were, unfortunately, a result of the racism that was especially present during the 1930s to the 1970s.…

The Black Lives Matter movement has swept the nation ever since the unjustified murdering of Trayvon Martin in 2012. During this time African Americans and other minorities were vulnerable and frightened yet came together across the world to make a drastic difference for the justice of these innocent young and old lives. This harmless phenomenon has been recently targeted as being “racist” and a “hate group” yet the whole meaning of the name and purpose is to remind everyone that black lives matter too. For example, the Baltimore riots that occurred in the spring of 2015, were only trying to push the importance of Black lives not completely destroy their city and rebel. The significance of this is crucial in this day and age due to the injustices of the court and police system, we’re only trying to reiterate something that should be given to all people at birth.…

The Book of Negroes is a novel written by Lawrence Hill as it follows the life of Aminata Diallo through her life as a slave. What makes Aminata so special is her abilities in reading and writing that allow her to excel where many other characters do not. This book is a depiction of the ways of which African people were treated in a time period were slavery was most prominent. Women, for example were treated much worse than the males, as they were raped and even forced to give away their own children. One universal truth that is apparent through the book is that education is one of the ways for someone to escape oppression and it can be seen through setting/power structures and characters.…
