Everyone expects the team to fail miserably, and that’s if they even make it to the first game. A once loyal community effectually disowns the team members, upset by the segregation and the team members themselves have lost faith in a successful season. Though the city and team members all rallied together as the season wore on, discrimination still proved to be one of the team’s greatest enemies. In an important game against the school’s rivals, referees purposefully made loads of bogus calls against the Titans in an effort to impede their perfect season. Coach Yoast, recognizing that the referees are out of the team’s control, huddles his boys up for an inspirational pep talk. The players, rallied by Coach Yoast, play the rest of the game with such ferocity that despite the referees they come out on top. This is a great example of fighting only the fights we can have control over and giving our best

An environmental influence is contractual responsibilities such as transfer rules, geographical restrictions or contractual obligations. An example of this in the film “Remember the Titans” is the geographical restriction of living in the town of Virginia. Discriminatory/prejudicial behaviour can be further broken down into direct and indirect discrimination against a particular group. The three most notable prejudices and associated behaviours within Remember the Titans are racism, sexism and homophobia and harassment, name calling and gender stereotyping. An example of racism and harassment from the film comes in the scene where Coach Boones house gets damaged by a brick thrown by a passer-by as they call out “Coach Coon”. This direct discrimination can also be related back to the ‘ego-defence’ mechanism wherein a real or perceived threat causes feelings of anxiety (moral anxiety – fear of violating societal codes) and in order to reduce these negative emotions, we fall back into certain defence mechanisms.…

Sports is a big aspect of high school life, especially the sport of football. The films The Blind Side, Remember the Titans, and Friday Night Lights, all revolve around the sport of football and how it manages to change the lives of the athletes. Among these films, the main themes I will focus on will be on the impact of being in a team and the influence an authority figure has on the athletes’ lives. I will begin with examining the theme of being a part of a sports team and how much growth it can have on an individual. At the beginning of the Blind Side, Michael Oher was extremely reserved and did not know how to play football.…
