Remember The Titans Foil Character

Despite the differences that the football team faces they are brought together. The author, Gregory Allen Howard develops contrasting characters in “Remember the Titans." The importance of contrast is an immense concept. The contrasts are explored through several characters such as Nicky Boone vs. Sheryl Yoast, Gerry Bertier vs. Julius Campbell, and Gerry Bertier vs. his white teammates and friends. Having the feminist movement in the 1970s influences this male-dominated film when the screenwriter introduces two female characters. Nicky Boone and Sheryl Yoast can be seen as foil character as Nicky portrays a girl that follows the accepted standards that society expects of women as Sheryl shows the various sides to females. When Julius went to meet Gary he is denied entrance by the nurse but Gary states: “Are you blind? Can't you see the family resemblance? That's my brother." This powerful quote shows their acceptance as real brothers. Gary starts off the program not trusting black people to be on his team and Julius is white controversial. As the camp continues they learn to work as a team and see past the color. Their hatred for one another turned into love for each other. Furthermore, the contrast between Gary’s and his white teammates and friends is also apparent throughout the movie. Gary is socially pressured because of the black and white tolerance. Gary encounters a dilemma where his white friends insist he attends a clearly segregated party in the hills, but he refuses and stays with his team. Standing in the middle of the racial differences Gary is in a position where his white friends urge him to be white, but he urges them to be a team.
