In the early to mid 1900’s racism was a problem in the United States of America, where minority groups were treated poorly for being apart of a minority. Martin Luther King Jr. was one of the many people to help abolish segregation, and he was supporting all minorities not just the black people. Remember the Titans took place during this time of segregation. The Titans-football team- was the only team in the state to have black and white americans play together. Coach Boone got rid of segregation on his team by 1 getting the players to get along, 2 he got them to respect each other, and 3 getting them to judge each other on their skill and personality instead of their skin color.…

Just recently in this past year, the NBA commissioner ordered LA Clippers Donald Sterling out of his team’s business and urging him to sell due to racist remarks. (Greg Botelho, 2014) Still in 2014, there is racial discrimination just as in the 1920’s, 30’s, and 40’s, even though Abe Saperstein was known as the person who had forced integration of African Americans into basketball. An example of this in the film “Remember the Titans” is the geographical restriction of living in the town of Virginia. This restricting them to only one option and that is to play for the T.C Williams football team and is emphasised because “...none of [the] boys can afford to go to some other district just to play ball”. As mentioned before, the children live in a ghetto(Harlem) where many African Americans live because they could not afford to live elsewhere and were also not allowed to due to the whites as they did not want any interaction with them so they essentially pushed them into living together. The children are not able to see the discrimination actually being faced by African Americans because there are only black people around where they live. By taking the children out and into a different area especially one where a lot of white people live, it will open their eyes and make them more aware as to what really is happening between the whites and African Americans and how the discrimination the African Americans face is more serious than what they’ve come to…

This class on Race, Gender, Class in Sports has made me think of things that I never even thought of before. I played sports, but never thought anything more than I played the sport and I enjoyed it, I never thought of how we got to this sport I play, or how I as a woman am able to play sports, or even how the game came to be. Some lessons I learned over this course are sports have come a long way, each sport has their own history, sports should rely on performance, to not take sports for granted, that race, gender and class are still the foundation of sports, and that we will always have obstacles to overcome in sports. In sports we will always be trying to strive and improve sports through race, gender and class along with trying to rely on performance to guide us in the…

There were two main problems that had to be solved in the film. First, both the black and white players on the T.C. Williams High School football team had to work together to create a successful team. Each player was required to change their attitude and open their mind for this to be possible. I believe Coach Boone’s coaching was the solution to this problem. His coaching style was to the point, intense, and equal towards all players.…
