Sabbath Exodus 20:8 states “Remember the Sabbath and keep it Holy” (NIV). Though the Sabbath is vital piece of spiritual formation and a command from God, the author has unfortunately been very poor at observing one. Life is busy. With one child at school and one at home, spouse working at the church, being a pastor of a church that has multiple services on Sundays and nearly every week activities on nearly every day of the week, the author has found it difficult to not only take personal time off but to further to observe a Sabbath. As a result in the recent months, fatigue and even personal health have suffered. Often with the lack of observing Sabbath, workaholism and poor personal boundaries have ensued. The discipline of play and recreation is vital in keeping healthy balance of life and ministry. The author and his family, work diligently to create play and recreation on a regular basis. Recreation and play may include trips to waterparks, a day at the zoo, family bike rides, and many other activities. Further, personally the author makes it a priority to regularly take time for personal recreational activities. These recreational activities include; fishing, golf, hiking, running, biking, and even household projects. It is also an essential piece to author’s Rule of Life to never ask people do to something’s in ministry that the pastor is not willing to do themselves. Additionally, as a part of the Rule, to regularly do tasks and serve others in ways that seems menial or lesser tasks, such tasks as vacuuming after a church event, or shoveling snow before a service. The intention is to not only serve others but also demonstrate further acts of service. As Nouwen articulates, one must be called to a life of serving that leads to making a difference in someone’s life, praying for the sick, caring for the poor, and loving the afflicted, (Nouwen, 2002).
