Throughout the memoir Night Elie Wiesel uses descriptive characterization and vivid imagery to illustrate his disbelief in God through the memoir to emphasize the recurring motif of loss of faith. Elie and the other prisoners received their food on the eve of Rosh Hashanah, but decided to wait until after the prayer to eat. Once the prayer begins Elie questions God, “How do you compare to this stricken mass gathered to affirm you their faith, their anger, their defiance. ”(Wiesel 66). When Elie questions “What are you my God?”(Wiesel 66), it reveals that Elie is now characterized as someone who does not believe in God because he is questioning why he and others pray to God.…

The vivid red color of the little girl’s dress naturally draws the eye towards the center of the poster first. The young child clutches on to a doll which already falls halfway under the shadow of the swastika. The doll signifies her innocence and childhood and the shadow suggests that the war will cause a loss of innocence and a termination of her childhood. This appeals to the protective instinct within adults as it amplifies the danger of the little girl’s circumstances, using her worried facial expression to further stress the urgency of the threat of war.…

Whereas voice involves cadence, body assertion, and even facial articulation, the words written on a page are compelled to demonstrate more than just what is being told through a series of other strategies and manners usually implanted in the writer’s voice. Both the memoirs I Have Lived a Thousand Years by Livia Bitton-Jackson, and Night by Elie Wiesel, transfer the nature of oppression through certain methods of voice, particularly syntax and tone.…

Author’s craft is a commonly used method in which the author uses literary devices to help tell a story. There are many different examples of Author’s Craft within the novel Night written by Elie Wiesel, a holocaust survivor. I believe that Wiesel is using Author’s Craft to help illustrate the story within the reader’s mind, as Night is a reflection of Wiesel’s personal memories with the Holocaust. Based on the different examples of Author’s Craft, I can conclude that the theme that Night is trying to convey is that “No matter how bad the circumstances are, do not give up!” as Elie Wiesel uses multiple types of Author’s Craft to help develop this theme in the story.…

The Oath of the Horatii, commissioned by King Louis XVI, was originally designed to unite the suffering people of France in support of him and his rule, but ultimately backfired, as it was used as propaganda for the rebels during the French Revolution. The Oath of the Horatii inspires patriotism among people, ensuring they are loyal to their country and their rulers. The pose taken by the three brothers is also seen in the Third of May in the soldiers with their guns drawn. The meaning behind the figures differs greatly however because the soldiers in Goya’s painting face away from the viewer. This transforms the french soldiers from patriotic fighters, to a mindless killing machine, slaughtering a massive line of innocent peasants.…
