Relinquish Driving Privileges Of Senior Citizens

I wonder if ageism plays a key in situations like these? Society views ‘older adults’ in such a negative light it is difficult to know if driving should be apart of their lives. After reading the New York Times article provided for us, it seems the general consensus in our society is that all older adults should succumb to ‘their physical frailty’. Elderly are more likely to be injured in an accident and more likely to die of that injury. My question is, if the aging population is forced to relinquish driving privileges at a certain age, how will they commute to where they need to go? If the government is going to regulate the driving ages, what transportation will they provide in return? Not all adults can take public transportations (bus, train, uber, etc) and they have the right to go where they please. It’s a tough question for sure! …show more content…
I think some senior citizens should be permitted to drive, but with limitations, such as the amount of driving they can do, the hours in which they can drive, or the distance from home they can travel. These restrictions may be placed either by the law or their insurance provider which vary by state. Physical strength, mental acuity, and overall health can begin to deteriorate as a person ages and they may not even be aware it is happening. Although there are some voluntary measures a person can utilize to check their driving abilities, seniors driving in an unsafe manner is still a large problem. An aging person may have some issues admitting they are no longer fit to take the wheel. It may be difficult to talk with a loved one suffering with these impairments but it is important to communicate the importance of safety when operating a motor
