Religious Symbolism In Vanitas Art

Vanitas art represents the swiftness of life, decline and to end with: death. They remind the viewer that death is inevitable and human life is fragile. My piece specifically represents whether we are in the 17th century or present day; death and the passage of time is certain. Nothing is ever promised in life, no matter how young you look or your earthly possessions. Life is not constant and predictable, and you’re only constant in life is death.
I used skulls in my collage because they symbolize mortality; which is why I made them the focus of my artwork. The candle, is a big symbol in Vanitas paintings as well. I used a lighter, because in this century people tend to use lighters instead of candles as a more contemporary symbol. It can indicate the passing of time, faith in God when its burning. When it eventually goes out, in my artwork is represents light in the ultimate darkness.

I also used the bee, as well as the butterfly, to symbolize hope, and to remind the view of the fragility of

The story then introduces us to two of the main characters, Elisa and her husband, whose first interaction can best be described as awkward and curt . When her husband leaves, a tinker drives up to Elisas’ estate.…

Carnations and Circumvention Flowers have long been a symbol for love, adoration, sex, and beauty. In Willa Cather’s short story “Paul’s Case” flowers are used to represent something else entirely. On the surface it might have seemed like Paul, the main character, had a simple fascination with flowers because of their beauty; however, the relationship goes much deeper than aesthetics. Paul wanted to be different and express himself in a way that went against the lifestyle that was associated with his humdrum town.…

The four focal points shown in these stories are country needs more important than the people’s needs, racial inequality, economic class level and loss of innocence in humanity. Furthermore, the words, “Scarred knees in dresses,” is a symbol of childhood being overtaken by womanhood. It’s a perfect exemplification of the theme, “coming of age.” In like manner, Rita Dove uses a carnation, one that is “over his heart,” to symbolize love, especially love that she hopes one day to have between herself and a boy.…

Since the Renaissance period, many things have changed, from the way we act and the way we dress, but one thing that has not changed is our appreciation for art. Art, then and now, captures the worries and problems that are going on in the World around us. Michelangelo’s “The Last Judgement” (1536-1541), has many scenes within the painting that show the people’s facial expressions, mostly of worry, for whether or not they will be sent to Heaven or Hell. Michelangelo (1475-1564) just may as well be one of the greatest Italian artists of the Renaissance period, creating some of the most creative and inspiring artwork during his lifetime. Looking at all of his paintings and sculptures, one can definitely tell that his artwork is very detailed…
