In the cycles of the art world, artistic styles progress over time and new innovative techniques embody an era, but the past periods never truly fade from the mind of the artist, hence periods like the Renaissance, a rebirth of an older era of art. However this retrospective obsession with art can meddle up an art history timeline if a statue is not properly dated to the correct era. This is case the regarding the Piombino Apollo, a statue found at sea in 1832 with a complex history of study where it eventually made its way to the Louvre Museum in Paris, France. The statue looks extremely archaic, like a kouros, but some more advanced stylistic evidence on the statue contradict the earlier claim regarding an archaic date and places it in a later Hellenistic one.…

‘The Mouth Holds the Tongue’ is an instillation piece designed and built by Lili Huston-Herterich, Laurie Kang and Nadia Belerique and installed at The Power Plant in Toronto, Ontario. The design of the piece is based structurally on the Sonsbeek Pavilion in Arnhem which was designed by Aldo van Eyck, who championed the structuralist architectural movement. The Toronto based trio of Kang, Belerique, Huston-Herterich have taken their own interpretation guided by there respective mediums; Belerique and Huston-Herterich in instillation, Kang in sculpture, and repurposed the pavilion concept to reflect their own values related to form. While van Eyck’s pavilion was originally designed to host the sculpture work some thirty artists it was meant…

The Confederate Soldier statue was built on the grounds of the Loudoun County Courthouse, which was built in Leesburg, VA in 1758. It has been a part of Loudoun history since then; serving as a jail, courthouse, legislature, and executive office. The statue, erected in 1908, depicts a confederate soldier aiming a rifle. Its purpose was to “serve as a memorial to the many Rebel soldiers who died fighting for the cause in which they believed” (as stated by Loudoun.gov). In fact, the courthouse, even served as the site of a small skirmish between north and south soldiers.…

During the class discussion about remembering slavery in the United States of America, a student in the class mentioned statues. With this, the class discussion turned from a productive discussion to a politicized debate over whether to remove or keep the statues of Confederate Statues. During this class discussion, I grew increasingly infuriated and frustrated because the politicized debate on statues overrode, what I believe is more important, the class discussion on how to remember slavery in the United States of America. During the class discussion on whether municipalities should keep or remove statues of Confederate generals, I became increasingly infuriated with the discussion because the beliefs of people largely correlate with their political affiliation and view of outside events.…

According to the poem, the “afterlife” that these species will experience will be in “square glass altars” (line 21). Initially, the reader can see that the tortoise will be going somewhere where they will be honored. Although the poem does not say it, “square glass altars” can mean display cases at the museum for everyone to see. Display cases can be what Atwood portrays of where the tortoises will be once they are extinct, as were other extinct species are displayed. Yes, I think it was a fitting end for the tortoises.…

Here she is standing five feet tall, with gentle feminine curls cascading down her narrow face and onto her shoulders; so perfectly symmetric it radiates beauty. The hard marble helps to emphasize the strong noble composure that illuminates in her expression yet the slightly off white color further expresses the contrast between purity and strength. The pursed lips, and slightly lifted chin help to express that her eyes are looking across the room and that she is looking down on the passersby thus depicting her true nature as a goddess overlooking everyone from above. The patrons walking through the museum can catch her stare from across the gallery in a simple glance despite her eyes being so marvelously simple as compared to the rest of the statue.…

While, both sculptures share the same sculptor one plays on peoples’ pathos, and the other on peoples’ ethos. For Instance, the Pieta brings up a sense of empathy and sorrow, and the sculpture of David is more about pride and the showcasing of this period. To illustrate, the Pieta is located at St. Peter, in the Vatican, and the statue of David was meant for display for all too see. However, both pieces are of biblical characters and composed with the idea of perfection. In the statue of David, Michelangelo copied Hellenistic practices as well, with his use of current culture and individuals.…

It can get very overwhelming when after many years, there are still issues with people believing that certain jobs are for men only and vice versa regarding women. Throughout the years, that statement has been proven wrong and even though Hilary Clinton was not elected as President, you can see how much times have changed with her even being a nominee. If I were to put myself in the shoes of the ‘fearless girl’, I know that I can do anything I set my mind to believe I can. I agree with you when you say the ‘fearless girl’ statue should stay because she gives encouragement to many young girls and women.…

IM’s remembrance of his once-loved college is highlighted with the image of the statue of the Founder, covered in gull droppings. The statue is positioned in such a manner that is impossible to tell whether the college founder is lifting up the veil to show the slave the real world or whether he is lowering the veil, pushing the slave back in place. IM states, “Why is a bird-soiled statue more commanding than one that is clean?” (36). The Founder is supposed to be representative of uplifting the black race by educating them to be successful in the real world.…

At first glance, the Hercules and the Hydra sculpture is easy to pass by. Located in the outside sculpture garden it stands on a slightly elevated bronze platform, which stands on a bigger, more elevated concrete pedestal that also rests on a larger concrete pedestal that has four embedded lights, each on one corner. The viewing area is large and allows for the audience to view the sculpture up close and far, while still being able circumambulate around the statue at a variety of distances. Because of the vastness of the space around the sculpture, at first glance from the walkway, the sculpture does not seem to be a big piece. However, the closer the proximity towards the sculpture, the bigger the piece seems to get, appearing as if Hercules…
