Religious Intolerance In Society

Decent Essays
Religious intolerance is ruining our modern world. Religion and religious practice is something that differs all over the world and is a huge controversial topic among nations. The negative effects of religion on society are tremendous. Religion is filling people with fear, turning them against themselves and others. Can you think of how many wars have started because of religion? Not only is the intolerance affecting people, it is also effecting the way of development of our world, with religious fanatics trying to withhold the way of scientific development. Not all faiths share the same beliefs and the same messages of equality, that leads to the damaging of our society. In my opinion some religions are less beneficial to society because …show more content…
It is filling a person with fear and doubt among themselves, which turns into the seclduing and even turning agaisnt others. [The Unbounded Spirit]. In many religions it is said that you are born a sinner and therefor tell you to live your life as a perfect human being. This is an entirely unatural process to act in such a way, we as people are all flawed. To act in such an unatural way puts doubt and pressure in everything you do. So as soon as they do something ‘wrong’ in the eyes of god, they start hating themselves. They believe they are a bad person, start second guessing that they are not a worthy human being. Their life becomes filled with resentment, anger and even hatred. If you hate yourself you are bound to start thinking that of others. Thinking of them as sinners. You will not tolerate religious beliefs that are different from yours. I believe this is why all around the world we see religions fighting one another. Why can’t we just accept that everyone has their indifferences? There is tremondous violence involved with religion fighting religion and the nonreligious against religious and this process is on …show more content…
Can you think of how many wars have been carried out throughout history in the name of God and religion? I can name a few from the many including; the French wars of religion in the 16th century between Catholics and Protestants, another war between those religions, the ‘Thirty Years war’, during the 17th century, and not to mention the on going war in Islam and all over the Middle East. [Schmidt, 2014]. The almost continual warfare in the Middle East over the past century has surely contributed to the idea that religion is a main cause of war. In these states is probably the most cruel and intense continueous form of war between religions. For example, most Iraqi Muslims invoke Yazidis as devil-worshippers, The Islamic State is victimizing them due to their misconception. If that’s not cruel I don’t know what is. Clearly the major reason for all the issues in the region is religion. There is, Sunni vs. Shia, Muslim Brotherhood vs. other religions and Coptic Christians and the secular state in Egypt and many more. [Hotspots-Middle East]. If we look at it from more perspectives, we can see that most faiths have the same ideals or policies, the idea of one God etc., so we have no reason to fight. I have personally lost faith in humanity, if there was a God, why haven’t these things been stopped? That is my personal opinion and not to which should I have offended others faiths. The point being

“Commentary” Response “Commentary” is an article written and presented by Ben Stein, a comedian who doubles as a political and cultural activist. This article was written specifically to discuss the issues in today’s Western culture concerning religion and the way it is perceived by the general population. Stein seeks to defend religion in the face of an endless torrent of unacceptance and blame from society, and tries his best to convey his message for change to the audience. Ever since the beginning of recorded history, humans have shown a natural instinct to learn. Our very nature dictates that our curiosity must always be satisfied, and that for every answered question two more must rise to take its place.…

Like one of the students in our class mentioned It isn 't the religion itself but the people within the religion who have stronger beliefs than others. Some of those beliefs being extreme eventually lead to violence. The followers of certain religions make up their own interpretation of scripture and so forth. This eventually leads to violence because people believe strongly in their faith want to force this upon other. There is this fight to be separate, to be in their own state or to have more powers all due to their religious belief.…

Religion brings people together under the best of circumstances, and the worst. We can see throughout history how religion has been used as a tool to motivate people to go to war. It’s been used by all religions all over the world. I feel like religion takes the blame while there are so many other motives for war. The worst part about it is that our leaders are using it for their benefit; they know people will always protect their religion.…

I agree that most of these conflicts were caused by so many other reasons, for example the crusades also known as the holy wars which lasted from the 11th century to the 13th century is a war in which may would claim and argue was caused mainly due to religion. How ever yes religion was a factor in the crusades and they are called the holy wars, But when you pull apart the pieces to this war, you could argue that the crusades was caused by due to the massacre of 3000 Christians for territory control, when it just happened to be that Jerusalem held holy significance to Christianity at the time. Thus sparking the crusades, I would like to think that any territory that is invaded and people are killed whether it holding a holy significance or not the people would still retaliate and seek revenge. The people fighting just happened to be Christian and Muslim which cause many misconceptions to be thrown out, and instead of looking at all other causes of why this war happened such as 3000 humans being slaughter which sparked anger and hatred towards this group of people, instead of simply saying it was linked directly to…

Tolerance is the ability to tolerate something, in particular the existence of opinions or behavior that one does not necessarily agree with. Intolerance, on the other hand, is the unwillingness to accept views, beliefs, or behavior that differ from one’s own. Robert Green Ingersoll once said, “Give to every human being every right that you claim for yourself.” But is that possible? Can we humans reach a point where we respect everybody?…

I agree with both Kate and Emily in the matter of how Islam, and other religions, can be oppressive towards women. However, talking to women who wears either a hijab or a burqa, I have encountered women who find it empowering in their faith. I do not think you can generalise what is oppression in one culture compared to another, because there are different norms within each culture. What may seem oppressing in one culture may have the opposite effect in another. To go off of what Emily said, in the Western world women can dress more provocative than women of the non-Western world, which is not an issue in one culture but is in the other.…

According to Religion Answers website (n.d.), states, “Religion gives transcendental meaning and purpose, and often, a goal to aspire to when life is complete” (para. 3). In today’s society religion plays a major role in our culture as well as putting pressure on those who are not of the dominant faith, Christianity. Through religious oppression, Christianity is used to marginalize, exclude, and deny the members and institutions of non-Christian religious groups in society the privileges and access that accompany a Christian affiliation (Adams, M., Blumenfeld, W. J., Castaneda, C., Hackman, H. W., Peters, M. L., & Zuniga, X., 2000, p. 251). Some member use beatings against other members as some are not allowed to get blood transfusions. Religion is very controversial subject to talk about, let alone to argue about. Richard Dawkins, author of Viruses of the Mind, does that exact thing he takes religion and in terms dissects it. While most people will be terribly offended by what Dawkins has written about, he is essentially laying out the facts about religion. Many “extremists” of a religion would say that Dawkins has malicious intentions since he is going against what their beliefs are. Religion has been a part of the human way for thousands of years.…
