What would it be like if everyone in the world shared the same religious beliefs? There are about 4,200 religions in the world. Today many countries are banning religious norms. In 2011 there was French law developed banning anyone from wearing clothing that covered his or her face, regardless if it was for religion (Steele par. 1). In Paris, France there was a woman wearing a niqab (which is a full face veil, where the woman is covered from head to toe) who was asked to leave the Opera, or remove her niqab and stay to watch the rest of the Opera. For example, the woman, from the article “She wore a Face” by Anne Steele, was wearing a niqab and was asked to leave the Opera, or take the niqab off; the security for this theater had no right to tell her to do that. It was the woman’s religious norm; they basically took away her religious freedom. In the article by Steele in the fourth paragraph it stated that women were forbidden from wearing full niqabs in the public spaces including streets, shops, museums, public transportation, and parks. The only time they are allowed to wear the niqab is when they are travelling in a private car or worshipping. Also, in this article by Steele, it says the woman was not from Paris and that she was visiting. Most likely this woman won’t be visiting Paris any time soon because she cannot wear her religious clothing anywhere in Paris. When they tell women, especially Muslim women they cannot wear something even if it is for religion that is taking away their religious norms, which goes with religious
