The overall theme of disdain and contempt for organized religion is portrayed through both the Rector of Sant’Anna’s and old Professor Roscio’s thoughts regarding Catholicism and the Catholic Church itself in the novel, To Each His Own by Leonardo Sciascia.…

Conflict theorists have been critical of religion, seeing as it can be used to promote social quo and maintain social inequalities. Most religions teach that the social hierarchy is what God desires for His people. In a large society, this creates a lack of social mobility inhibiting a lack of balance between groups. This has been viewed in many societies of the past. For example, in the Middle Ages, Christians believed in the “divine right of kings,” stating that kings were chosen by God.…

The passage is divided into three main parts: the shock to religion that happens primarily during the 1960s, the first aftershock in the 1970s and 1980s and the second aftershock in the 1990s to now. Your personal orientation of religion can also be shaped by one of the three perspectives of religion: functional, belief, and materialist. I would say that I am a mixture of both the functional and the belief perspective. The functional perspective says that religion is useful, and that it is found everywhere because it is useful both for society and for individuals. Religion does things for us, such as helping define ourselves and making the world and life more understandable according to us. From another point of view, the belief perspective says that ultimate reality exists, and it cannot be perceived.…
