Religion is a sensitive topic. For most, this is because religion serves as refuge in a world that seems to be meaningless and chaotic. Religion implies a supreme, serious, and divine connotation. Millions of individuals around the world based their livelihood, family life, relationships, and morals on a single religions. As a result, it is a very sensitive topic to honestly joke about. In order to understand why religious jokes, or jokes about religion are often popular, one has to have experienced religious life. The experience does not need to be first it. Experience with a religion exposes it’s rigid, restrictive, and cold nature. Most religions limit hedonistic what we as humans naturally enjoy doing. Religions are often organized, symbolic, and sacred. These traits of religions make them prime sources of absurd and good-natured humor.
Religions are often secular, attractive to a specific group of people. This makes religious gatherings great cultivating grounds for good jokes and humor. Christians often mock each other.
