Religion is nothing more than a moral and psychological ideal to give purpose, to lead, and to bring hope into people's lives. Religion has always been able to enlighten and lift people’s spirits. It is used as a relief system to make people feel better about their current situation. It leads people to do good and tells them right from wrong. It sets their morals. Religion offers people a feeling of purpose for why they are on the earth. It has people do extraordinary things with their time and resources through actions that are selfless and giving. Religion gives people a reason to keep living and to look forward to the afterlife. If one has religion by his side, another man cannot confine him, for religion gives men hope and power over his physical limitations. Harriet Beecher Stowe displays this in her book “Uncle Tom’s Cabin”. The freedom a religious man feels is incomprehensible to an atheist, or non-denominational man. Tom proved this while being beaten, as he forgave the men beating him to death. After the fatal blow, Tom talked to god for his abusers, and proclaimed to the lord that he would “be willing to b’ar all i have, if it’ll only bring ye to christ! O, Lord, give me these two more souls, I pray” (Stowe 477). The willingness of Uncle Tom to set aside his anger and pain against the people who did him harm is able to be done because of his strong faith. His beliefs put him above the limitations of his human qualities and lifted his spiritual self above the vengeance a normal man would seek.
