In the U.S., Christianity is practiced by a large percentage of the population. Legislators often fail to realize that their country was partially founded on the separation of church and state, and, their religious views cannot influence the lawmaking process. Because religion is so influential in your opinions, actions deemed as sins in the Bible are often made illegal through government legislation. For example, same-sex sexual activity was illegal until 2003, and marriage equality was not granted to same-sex couples until 2015. The main reason for these discriminatory policies was because the Christian Church often frowns upon homsexuality; the Bible says if a man should lie with a man, as would with a woman, he shall be put to death. These policies promote the idea that homosexualty is wrong while placing gay individuals in danger. In addition to homosexuality, the Christian Church also disapproves of abortion. Pro-life individuals often pressure their like-minded politicians into banning abortions and defunding Planned Parenthood. This shows the danger of religion because one person’s religious views place someone else’s life in danger. Women who can’t survive pregnancy or childbirth are forced to die because Christians believe the fetus is alive and “killing it” is an abomination. These congressmen and women, however, fail to recognize that they can’t pass laws to preserve religious beliefs or practices because the U.S. is a secular society.
