The time period of Trujillo’s control made people feel like they were locked in a cage with no way out. The only way out through many people was religion. The problem was that religion and politics were very much connected. It is a recurring theme in this novel, In the Time of the Butterflies By Julia Alvarez. The connection of religion and politics was seen throughout this novel, allowing the reader to understand the perspective of the character that showed this thematic thread. The church is seen supporting the church when Patria says “We all knew there was priests around who would report you to the SIM if you spoke against the regime.,” (Page 154). The church can be seen resisting Trujillo's regime when Patria states “Later, we found out this was happening all over the country. The bishops had gathered together earlier in the week and drafted a pastoral letter to be read from every pulpit that Sunday. The church had at last thrown in it's lots with the people.,” (Pg 207). The church supports Trujillo’s unjust regime at first, reporting people to the SIM if they speak against it. There was no separation between government and church. The Church promoted Trujillo’s regime and it made people fear to go against it. No one liked Trujillo actions. The church won't listen to the people’s thoughts, but instead, the government. Later on, the Church is seen resisting the regime by reading the pastoral letter to the people. The church finally realizes that Trujillo’s regime wasn't fair to the people. They decided to rebel against Trujillo and finally join the people. The role it plays was that it was the first big major rebellion in this regime.
