Tim Tebow's Use Of Religion In Sports

Tim Tebow was born while his parents were doing mission work in the Philippines. He was raised with Christian values, morals, and ethics. Throughout his life he has done mission work and, with his family, devoted his life to Christ. Tebow has always been an accomplished athlete, but his morality never faded. Tebow is currently an outfielder in Major League Baseball’s New York Met’s minor league system. In his college days, Tebow was a standout quarterback at the University of Florida where he won the BCS National Championship games in 2006 and 2008. He also won the Heisman Trophy, for the best college football player, in 2007. He then was drafted into the National Football League by the Denver Broncos in the first round of the 2010 NFL Draft. Unfortunately, his career as a professional football player was short lived due to his height and lack of passing ability. However, Tebow is a man of God on and off the field. In Gene Johnson’s “High School Football Coach Who Refused to Stop Praying Placed on Paid Leave,” he tells the story of a football coach in Washington who has led prayers before and after the game with whoever wanted to join. Despite warnings from district officials to stop the public display of religion, he continued to pray. The district’s cause for placing Coach Kennedy on paid leave was that praying on the field violated, “federal and state constitutional rights” although Kennedy’s prayers were completely voluntary. Coach Kennedy’s firing is a perfect example of the problem of religion in sports. For the kids who volunteered to be a part of the prayers are now out on thanking the Lord with their teammates. Secular people see no need for religion in sports and are blocked off to all the value that it has in Christian athletes.
