Throughout the entirety of the first section of In Cold Blood, religion is mentioned several times and how important it is to the Clutter family. It says at one point that “The Rupp family were Roman Catholics, the Clutters, Methodist --- a fact that should in itself be sufficient to terminate whatever fancies she and this boy might have of some day marrying” (8). Religion plays a part in not just the spiritual life of those in Holcomb city, but it also impacts who those in the Clutter family are allowed to, maybe, one day get married to. Mr. Clutter stated at one point that one of the first things he asks people is if they drink, smoke, and if they are church goers. It affects the dating life of young teens and it affects friendships. Susan Kidwell, Nancy’s friend, would get dropped off at the Clutters’ house every Sunday morning by her dad so that they she could go to church.
