Comparison of what the Bible and Qu’ran say about Gay Relationships
Many conservative Christians and Muslims believe that their sacred texts, the Bible and Qu’ran, condemn same-sex relationships.The King James Version of the Bible has over 31,000 versus. There are five versus and one passage in the Bible that refers to same sex behavior: 3 in the old testament, 3 in the new. The Qu’ran contains 6,236 versus. There are five versus that are believed to refer to gay relationships. Throughout the different translations of these sacred texts, the meaning of certain versus have changed to focus more on same-sex relationships. The passage is believed to be referring to the same story as the one told in The Holy Bible, the story of Sodom and Gamorrah. Most Muslims believe that this piece of scripture refers to God’s disapproval of gay or same-sex relationships. The piece of scripture referring to Lut and the lust for men over women in Chapter 7 is one of the main pieces of scripture from the Qu’ran that Muslims use to point disapproval at gays. Since the story in the Qu’ran is similar to the story in The Holy Bible, the Qu’ran can be interpreted to mean that God disapproved of the men lusting for another man, the angel, while they were married to their wives. In the story of Sodom and Gamorrah, from the Bible, the men were married to women from the town. Most probably had families. The reason God disapproved of the men’s actions were because the actions were those of lust. The actions in the Qu’ran are that of lust, as well. When both religious groups decipher and analyze their sacred texts, they see the surface picture, that God and Allah condemn homosexual behavior, that homosexuals will not make it through the gates of heaven. The religious groups of Christianity and Islam choose to look at the surface picture of their sacred texts instead of delving deep into the history of The Holy Bible and the Holy Qu’ran. Modern translators have changed the translation of certain words in both The Holy Bible and the Holy Qu’ran to lean more towards homosexuality versus the true meaning of the original word. While God and Allah may condemn homosexual behavior, the sacred texts of each religious group are unclear.
