Volunteering at the Relay for Life at Central Michigan University as an undergraduate student is a rewarding experience. This organization provides countless incredible opportunities and assistance in regards to cancer research, patients, and to the families of those affected by the fight against or loss to cancer. An uncle of mine lost his battle to pancreatic cancer. His doctor told him he had three months to live at the time of his diagnosis, but fortunately was granted four. Another uncle lost his ongoing battle with colon cancer a few years later. His unfortunate circumstance was drawn out for nearly two years. The PTA would assemble all the items from each class in gigantic gift baskets for the highly anticipated raffle. Parents and students that desired to win the baskets had to buy tickets to put in the smaller baskets designated for choosing the winners.…

It was during this time that I first began volunteering at the pediatric department of the hospital he was staying at. My grandfather’s cancer also spurred an interest in nonsurgical treatments of cancer that led me to shadow Dr. Simon Cheng, a radiation oncologist at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital. In 2013, in the midst of multiple health issues, my mother was told that she might have breast cancer. Since my father was working in China, I took time off to be with her.…

Finding a cure for cancer is of personal importance for me because my grandfather was recently diagnosed with a rare form of cancer called multiple myeloma. Multiple myeloma, if not caught early, is often a terminal form of cancer and can only be treated with methods that will stretch out the remaining years of your life, not save it.
