Relay For Life Analysis

As a high school student, I believed the myth that I was just a teenager, that I couldn't make a significant change in the world or in my school. The belief that I couldn't influence the world caused me to hold my tongue when I saw unmet needs. At my school, there are no social events and the majority of our students are bused in from other cities. We tend to lack a sense of community because unless you're on a sports team, there's no reason to stay after school with friends. This was an unmet need I wished to be apart of changing. Through Relay for Life, a fundraiser for the Canadian Cancer Society, I learned to not compare myself to others and helped create an atmosphere in my school that I had always wished existed.

A time in my life that has abundantly affected the way I see myself, community and world is when I volunteered at a soup kitchen or a program known as 'Bread of Life'. Helping people made me realize that it's a good intention. Volunteering makes you feel proud of yourself. When I was volunteering I made food, helped out in the kitchen and helped clean. Knowing that people who needed food was getting the nutrients and the people were getting fed made me see that helping out can be a huge impact.…

Mark Twain once said “the two most important days in your life are the day you are born and the day you find out why” (Twain, ND). I’ve always thought about helping others so they can have the same benefits that I have today, if it’s just to speak out or even not to feel discouraged because you walk in somewhere and people look at you because you're a different skin color. By my junior year I was able to do that by notifying the people in the community about this big issue. The task was to go around the San Fernando community to pass out flyers and inform them about immigrants rights. While doing this, I learned the skills of speaking to a stranger about issues that still concern us today. Going to the first house was terrifying, stepping into those first steps and speaking to a stranger in the morning that doesn’t want to be interrupted was going to be difficult.…

After attending the annual Pope John Paul II Lecture on Social Justice, I found that many interesting points were raised that I never considered before. Although America prides itself as the land of opportunity, it seems as if our individualistic culture has prevented us from resolving various issues that have had detrimental impacts on families in the United States and around the world. For instance, I really liked how Sister Mary Beth compared the progression of society to the release dates of popular magazines. For instance, while we first started with Life magazine, every other magazine had a title that got more specific such as People, Us, and Self.…

What have you done to make your school or your community a better place? 370 “With the world so set on tearing itself apart, it don 't seem like such a bad thing to me to want to put a little bit of it back together.” This quote from the recent film Hacksaw Ridge embodies my sentiment that brightening up someone’s day is the best feeling in the world for me. This desire to help others prompted me to volunteer for two years at UCLA hospital to help transport patients. Hospital patients often deal with severe pain and sometimes loneliness, and I knew that giving some of my time could improve their moods and outlooks.…

The school club allowed me to see the importance of what this group of peoples can do for the school and the communities. As I was getting involved with the clubs, I had a great opportunity, created by the school, to help the homeless people, people with inconvenient health, little children, seniors and ext. As I was helping either directly or indirectly, I always kept in mind that through my hours of service I could help and give enjoyment to many numbers of people so I should give my best to the things I do in remembrance of those people that might have a happy moment in their life. Through the club activities I participated, I was able to help the communities and the peoples that need some extra supports. Other than this school club activities I also attended some leadership seminars provided by the Dallas Korean organization.…
