In the book Anthem by Ayn Rand, the society is orderly, simple, and “equal.” The government has forced everyone and everything to be the same. Now, instead of speaking as an individual, they speak as one. People are forced to say “we” instead of I, “us” instead me or “ours” instead of mine. Throughout the course of the text, the theme of Relationships has progressed and developed in many ways.
In the beginning, Equality 7-2521 loved his brothers, just as they love him. Before they go to bed, every student says, “We are nothing. Mankind is all. By the grace of our brothers are we allowed our lives. We exist through, by and for our brothers who are state. Amen” (Rand 21). This shows all brothers are selfless. She came closer, unknowing of Equality being there. But her sisters called for her, leaving Equality in a mind of awe. The next few days, continuing to work on the far north road, he kept his eyes on liberty until one day, she looked at him. Not smiling, no emotion, turned and walked away. The next day, eye contact was made again but this time, instead of her being emotionless, she smiled. Equality thinks, “We had broken so many laws, and today we have broken one more. Today, we spoke to the Golden One” (Rand 42). After they talked, he went back to where he lived. As of that night, he was singing. Singing from joy, but not joy his brothers have gave him, but from the Golden One. Equality, now given the name ‘the Unconquered’ but the Golden One, got to talk to the Golden One today again. Not only did they talk, they touched and awkwardly walked away. His liking of his brothers and society started decreasing as he started thinking more for himself. As those in his society turned against him for his uniqueness. About to be captured, he ran off, hoping to never go back to that horrid
