Her By Spike Jonze: Film Analysis

Relationships are complicated. The film “Her”, directed by Spike Jonze, is a clear example of this. Throughout the film, Theodore Twombly is challenged by the decision of having a relationship with a digital lifeform. He struggles with his artificial companion, Samantha, wishing that she were real. Samantha faces many of her own challenges as well, one of them being that she is unable to have human interaction with Theodore. Although, technology helps Theodore to break out of his comfort zone, helping him build communication with others. The film “Her” provides an effective commentary about how technology changes relationships through the various examples that are provided. Technology allows people to connect whenever and wherever they want, like when Theodore was talking to Samantha while atop a snowy mountain. It helps people interact on a deeper level because of the ability to have ongoing communication with others. Technology is able to help people’s relationships because “empathy is created when we discover the things we share” (Manney par.13). People are able to meet others who share their same interests. Therefore, technology allows someone to be able to talk to certain people who share their same feelings. It is easier to relate with someone who shares the same feelings, and technology makes that possible. The devices that people use to communicate, can help them “develop deep and meaningful relationships to the spaces to the spaces we move through and the people we connect with” (Farman par.26). Technology gives people the opportunity to meet people that they may not have met in person. It allows the ability to get to know someone before a meeting in person takes place as well. Technology was able to help Theodore step out of isolation and meet new people in person. It connects people together and allows them to communicate and share their feelings. It can broaden the scope of people that an individual may meet as well. Technology makes communication in relationships simpler as shown in the film “Her” by allowing people to message each other, and even call no matter where they are. Theodore was able to setup a date with a woman without having to meet her in person. Technology grants unlimited possibilities in regards to communication and
