There is an image in America of what a family should look like: one mother, one father, a couple of children and perhaps the family dog. The reality of what makes a family, however, is much more complex. In the book Plainsong by Kent Haruf, the reader discovers a variety of families, that are made up in a multitude of different ways. While some of these families are defined by blood relation, almost all of them differ in some way from the traditional conception of the family unit. The reasons that these family groupings come about are as varied as the families that they create, but in the end, they fulfill the needs of the family members regardless of the existence, or lack, of blood ties.…

Everyone has a family of some kind. It may be the parents and siblings they were born with, or it could be a gang of six elite drivers with an affinity for robbing banks at high speeds. Ultimately, family is what people make of it, and it can be the ‘traditional’ two parents, one brother, one sister, and one dog, or it could be a girl and a baby she was left with. Barbara Kingsolver’s The Bean Trees is the story of a poor Kentucky girl with small town thoughts and big town dreams who escapes her hometown without getting pregnant, but manages by the hand of fate to be left with a child that was never her’s in the first place.…

In the excerpt, What Is A Family, by Pauline Irit Erera, a professor at the University of Washington School of Social Work, discusses the backlash against families that are diverse and argues that new perspectives are needed that value families that are diverse and fluid. Erera does well in supporting the claim she is making by giving a background on the traditional family, discussing what caused a change in the traditional family values, and giving a counterargument for the backlash against the families that are diverse. The writer argues that "the refusal to acknowledge them as families is a denial that their relationships count, regardless of their stability, duration, or quality." (Erera 628). Erera's main claim is that family is not a…

The traditional nuclear family has long been seen as the perfect model and highly desired. But not all families are perfect, and different circumstances lead to alternative family structures. Neither traditional nor nontraditional families are better than the other, as both have their own problems. Moodysson’s Together focuses on the progression of interactions between individuals and families, and how individual problems contribute to greater intra-group and inter-group conflict. Although there is a preference towards the tradition family model, the film also implies that ultimately family is self-constructed of individuals one chooses and - most importantly - stays together with.…
