Buck's relationship with Hal, Charles, And Mercedes was a horrible one. These people were harsh and pushed Buck to unreachable expectations and wore him out. The cruel master were Hal, Mercedes, and Charles. These people were some of the many people taking part in the gold rush. Buck was sold to them from another mail delivery team. The relationship with these people and Buck was horrible. Although this group was inexperienced with dogs they were very cruel in the sense that they would beat the dogs if they did not obey orders. They were on expeditions that were were so far but they didn't have enough food because they fed the dogs too much and were left with none. The dogs kept getting weaker and weaker. Hal practiced the theory was "that one must get hardened". After he couldn't explain that to his partners he tried to force it to the dogs. Both the owner and Buck were equally respected by one another. The owners that were experienced were Francois and Perrault. These owners were not good or bad, they were in more of a business type of relationship. The reason why it was an ok partnership was because the owners only need them for there extremely long expedition. They treated the dogs as partners and did not want much fighting and always kept them fed and in good shape. This is much in like Charles and his team because they were torturing the dogs. This is also not like Buck's good relationships because they do not love him, they only respect him. A sign of respect for Buck was when they made shoes for Buck out of their moccasins because Buck was not used to the intense cold so he was whimpering.
