A relationship should be a balanced mixture of love, trust, empathy and freedom of expression. From the beginning of the story the “Yellow Wall Paper” the author pinpoints a very parasitic relationship between a husband and a wife. Relationships and marriage should normally evoke happiness, but this relationship was quite different. John plays multiple roles. The narrator’s husband, parent and her doctor; all of which are authoritative. This leaves the wife in a depressive state, controlled and manipulated by her husband. The control extends to him being her primary physician, which is not standard practice as physicians do not treat family.
