One of the paramount impacts in Hawaiian history was the Great Mahele of 1848. The Mahele was a land division that was legislated by King Kamehameha III. The Mahele’s purpose was to supply Hawaiians with additional land. Moreover, the Mahele was to halt the foreigners from procuring control over Hawaii. Nevertheless, the foreigners ended up with the preponderance of the land (Cachola).…
Kamehameha was a great leader because, he was the first Hawaiian to unify all 8 Hawaiian Islands. As Kalani’opu’u’s nephew he wa as well trained not by Kalani’opu’u, but by Kekuhaupi’o(1). He was strong, fierce, and unstoppable at the time. One example is, he was the only person to unify all 8 Islands, also he, was an effective leader because he was able to kill almost every ali’i. This is part of why Kamehameha was the greatest leader in Hawaiian history.…

Others, like African Americas, were part of a tradition of political exclusion but still significantly impacted the development of America’s government and political system. While we, as a nation, have widened our definition of ‘all men are created equal’ we still have work to do. Inegalitarianism may be weakened today compared to our political system in the past, but it is still not entirely gone. If one understands the role race played in developing our country’s government and political system, then he or she can better understand inegalitarianism. Hopefully, this knowledge could be used for not only the extinction of inegalitarianism, but also the promotion of…
Political parties are such a key aspect to the society than the average United States citizen may think. They play an active role in our society and have been since the early days of America in the 1800’s. Looking back into history, it reveals the true functions of the political parties that play a factor into how the people of early America were impacted by them. The American government system would be nowhere if it were not due to the building of the political party groups. Many people know the political parties as two or more groups trying to fight each other for election, which is true, but they also check on the other party, influence the public, as well as inform the public about the other and any wrong doings that they commit.…
“Giving the culture respect and honoring that when it is appropriate, shows the patient they can trust you,” (Minority Nursing Staff, 2013). Nurses must have an understanding of the client’s culture. Understanding the client’s culture will promote culturally congruent interventions. Culturally congruent intervention for the Hmong culture regarding Hep B would consist of the use of eastern and western medicine. Eastern medicine that the Hmong culture could practice includes Shamanism, coining, cupping, herbal medicine, spooning or acupuncture (Xiong, M., et al., 2013).…
In this Anthropology class, most if not all of the societies that we look at and investigate have some form of evidence that shows the emergence of social complexity and complex structure like states or civilizations. The article of Norman Yoffee states, “All human societies develop along a universal "evolutionary" trajectory from small and egalitarian to large and socially complex”. I believe that this statement is inaccurate, all societies that have come to existence have not all developed on a universal trajectory (small to large). I believe that there are many different evolutionary possibilities in societies. In Norman Yoffee’s article, page 72 figure 6.6 shows a more accurate trajectory of evolution in social complexity where there…
Racism in Hawaii is a problem that everyone must endure at some point in life. It’s a known fact that racism affects most of our communities here in the U.S. Despite this reality, numerous provincial people continue to induce that it is not a problem. Many issues such as racism have many effects on our communities, each having their own level of impact. The effects of racism vary from racial tension to sovereignty activists and ‘reverse racism’.…
I think what he meant on that statement was that even if we could communicate effectively using an inerpreter but there were still so many differences in opinions that the problems would still have existed. What we see as abuse and neglect in our own culture, which can result in losing your child like what happened in the book. It looks like look that's how the Hmongs takes care and show how they loved their children and family . Even if the language barrier was solved, the problem will still exist due to misunderstanding. As the book points out, the Hmong people don't understand the concept of organs and diseases with causes other than what they believed.…
For Native Hawaiians, the last two centuries have been a struggle against extinction. Not long after Captain Cook sailed up in 1778, disease, poverty and political and economic exploitation began pushing their culture toward the vanishing point. One harsh milestone came in 1893, when American and European businessmen backed by United States marines overthrew the Hawaiian kingdom. Annexation by the United States quickly followed. “Hawaii has since thrived as a multiracial society, and its native language and arts have undergone a rebirth in the last generation or two” - http://ic.galegroup.com/ic/ovic/NewsDetailsPage/NewsDetailsWindow?disableHighlighting=false&displayGroupName=News&currPage=&scanId=&query=&prodId=OVIC&search_within_results=&p=OVIC&mode=view&catId=&limiter=&display-query=&displayGroups=&contentModules=&action=e&sortBy=&documentId=GALE%7CA146715697&windowstate=normal&activityType=&failOverType=&commentary=&source=Bookmark&u=isb&jsid=6b5aa6df167d8497aa62946e0f677df7…
The relationship between the government and the Native American population has experienced problems since America was first settled. There has been a long history of destructive federal policies and actions that have hurt Native communities, increased inequality, and accelerated the loss of tribal cultural traditions (Karaim). The United States has promised Native American tribes the right to self-government and to exist as distinct peoples; the government is also supposed to provide adequate resources to aid the needs of Native citizens and strengthen the inherent sovereignty of tribal nations (Keel). The relationship has experienced troubles, especially in educating young Native Americans. The Native American education system is failing to…
The United States Government reigns over and provides for millions of people. The Government uses taxpayer dollars and administers to the people in order to keep the country united and functioning. However, there is only so much money to go around to all the different departments that need assistance; therefore, some harsh decisions must be made based on what areas need the most help. Native American’s have not only been underrepresented in the government, but in the media, job systems and in addition lost almost all of their land 200 years ago but continue to be put on the back burner. Nonetheless, Native Americans are still struggling to find jobs, receive healthcare and complete their education with little to no assistance from the government.…
I learned a lot about Taiwan’s values. China has strong relations with Taiwan but I never thought it was to the degree which their values are much the same. Also being part Chinese, I’m able understand and connect to many of the values such as the confusion ideal of filial piety which talks about having respect for one’s parents, the opposing forces of yin-yang, and fengshui which a way of looking at things as they flow naturally. In contrast, I can connect to Hawaiian values as since I was grounded in some of them. The Taiwanese values I choose are qi, xiao, yi, backing up words with action, and using food for medicine.…
Summer is the most anticipated season of the year for many people especially those in cold countries. It’s like taking a break from the cold and freezy winter weather when trees, roofs and the ground are filled with snow. During summer, everyone gets excited for a beach holiday, an out of town travel with the entire family and friends. Relaxing near the beach, watching the sunrise and sunset, eating fresh tropical fruits and enjoying fun activities and tours. There are several ideal summer destinations around the world but Maui Hawaii is a paradise to explore, appreciate and experience.…
The political system according to (Mays and Ruddell 1) is composed of all the various forms and types of governments at all levels. Nevertheless, what is politics? Politics are considered the management of conflicts (Dye 1). In chapter 1, it explains the importance of issues that arise and what the Government provides to citizens.
