Relationship-Factor Approach Analysis

if I can classify myself into two different approaches, but after reading it seems to me that you can have qualities of each. As I stated earlier, I think the stronger approach to my life is the Relationship-Factor Approach. This approach describes the essence of who I am and how I think. It keeps up with the structures of how I was taught concerning my religious beliefs. I found it very ironic that Horton mentioned that Methodists (along with a few other denominations) are more affiliated with the Relationship-Formation Approach (Hoton, 2009). I had already grouped myself within the aligning factors to this category before I found that it had belonged to my own church affiliation.

In the article, “The More Factor”, by Laurence Shames he explains how historically Americans developed a desire for “more” as the people became a custom to economic growth. The author describes the relationship between the frontier and American consciousness. This is seen as he first provides a historical explanation from the 19th century. He gives us an insight of how historically way of life has changed however, he shows how people are still believing that the country will keep on growing. As a result people do not change their own minds at all.…

This week’s reading focused on the elaborate bureaucracy that is the United Methodist Church regarding its many governing bodies from conferences to committees, boards, and agencies. I found it interesting as the concerns over the democratic-like voting processes for each group was discussed. For instance, Tuell highlights the issues surrounding alternate forms for electing bishops, i.e. not using an appointment system, and how this would lead to parochialism (page 121). If each conference elected its own bishop it would also affect the pastoral appointment system and ultimately “allowing a constituency to elect and call its own ‘pastor,’ rather than having one appointed to it.” During my reflection on this topic, I feel there is a higher tendency…

The worldview philosophy I most closely identify with is cathartic (psychological) transformation and empowerment. I believe the influencers that have caused me to seek authoritative careers and embark on achievements beyond limitations to validate my worth were my absent parents. I’ve experienced a lot of personal distress as a child growing up with the feeling of abandonment, insecurity and neglect. I felt my love ones had no logical reasoning for allowing me to grow into an adult feeling these type damaging emotions and cognitive illusions. According to Psalm 51:10 “Create in me a clean heart, O God, And renew a steadfast spirit within me.”…

I believe that I show a secure attachment style in my interactions with God and others. It is not a textbook secure attachment style because I find myself in different situations going between ambivalent and avoidant styles in a minor way. At times I want the attention from others, moving closer to them and trying to connect with them more. I am very content with where and who I am. I, in most things, feel that I am satisfied with myself and ability to interact with others.…

In this interaction, I think it would have been more therapeutic if I had asked an opened ended question when the mother of Mr. S stated: “We’re feeling pretty sad today.” Instead, I could have asked, “what is causing you to feel sad today?” It would have been good opportunity to find out more detail about how Mr. S and his family were doing, and what caused Mr. S to be admitted to the hospital again. During this interaction, I became comfortable interacting with Mr. S, even though he was unable to respond to my questions. During this interaction, I was attempting to engage with the ct.…

Using the theological perspective with the psychological perspective helps makes the sessions more valuable and successful. When the counselor is using theology it is important for the counselor to have a strong foundation and knowledge of the Bible, history from a Christian perspective, and theological systems (McMinn, 2011). Next is the spiritual perspective that helps individuals to understand God’s grace when we are constantly falling but with his grace we can learn from the different situations to gain wisdom from our God (McMinn, 2011). With the three foundations being used it is important that the counselor is able to address them in the different area such as prayer, scripture, sin, confession, forgiveness, and redemption.…

America is known as the land of opportunities. In Laurence Shames’ essay, “The More Factor”, he discusses how America has an obsession with the concept of growth and having more. According to Shames, the quality of life and other values have been underdeveloped, since Americans value having more. In the context that Laurence Shames uses the term “frontier”, it does not show any contradiction, when saying that the American “frontier” culture focuses on measurable expansion, and then using the term “frontier” to describe knowledge and culture. Shames’ argument that quantity over quality is important because it conforms to the idea of people improving the American lifestyle.…

Based on looking at my two previous papers, my personal faith convictions would be most in line with John Wesley. He was involved in the building of the Methodism movement. His stance on getting into heaven seemed to be a mix of different ideologies. The two different ones that come to mind have to do with Calvinists and the Quakers. The Calvinists believe the Bible was The Word of God and it was distributed or spoken through the Holy Spirit.…

I believe the therapeutic relationship is the most important component to the process of counseling. My definition of the therapeutic relationship is “the building of trust between client and counselor that allows for growth and change to take place”. The relationship between counselor and client allows for true change and growth to happen in therapy. Knowing that each theory has a different model of therapeutic relationship I think the most important quality is trust and understanding. Building trust can be a hard task for a therapist but only after trust has been gained can the healing process begin.…
