Literary Analysis Of The Fall Of The House Of Usher

The relationship between the twins, Madeline and Roderick, is toxic and “evil”. Which fuels the anger and the evil in the House of Usher. The house is a symbol of the broken family. There is only the twins left and they both are sick in their own ways. The narrator is not aware of the actual evil powers that are lurking around every corner in the Usher residence. Madeline becomes deathly ill and is thought to be dead. When she turns out to be alive, we can see that Roderick’s anxiety and illness has officially consumed him. “The narrator refers to these as “ghastly tree-stems” and later notes that “the stem of the Usher race […] had put forth, at no period, any enduring branch,” so that “the entire family lay in the direct line of descent”. In other words, the Ushers have become identified with their mansion because they have always lived there; and they have remained there because the Usher name and estate have passed directly from father to son, with no “collateral issue” —that is, no other branches of the family tree.” (Mustafa 51)

The possible reasons behind the story and the ideas that many people have, regarding this particular story are quite interesting. Doing this has also helped me with my ability to research information more efficiently. The Fall of the House of Usher is, just like most of Poe’s stories and poems is dark and mysterious. It is American Romanticism and shows that, along with the Gothic style of writing. A last interesting fact about “The Fall of the House of Usher” is that Poe’s been known to have a young woman die in his stories.
