Personal Effectiveness And Interaction Skills Essay

Whether it be taking care of people, managing people, collaborating with others or merely attending school or work, what people do in these areas heavily relies on their ability to work with other individuals. This goes along with the fact of human beings social creatures wherein it is impossible to not interact with another individual may it be at the workplace, school, public places or even at home as social interaction is a key variable to not only one's survival but also to happiness and success in one's careers. The book discusses thirty skills divided into three main categories an individual develops throughout life and these are: Personal effectiveness, Interaction skills, and Intervention skills. Generally these are called 'People Skills' as these not only are key factors in developing oneself but also in dealing with other people and help make use of personal resources that are available. However there are still misconceptions surrounding this skill; mainly that skills such as these are mostly mistaken as 'qualities' or 'characteristics'. These two are fixed aspects of a person's character or personality however making these two synonymous to people skills are incorrect for two reasons:

It is made clear that the biggest barrier to development is not 'I can't but 'I don't want to.' To counteract this, a new and positive outlook towards skill development should be created that also helps counteract these misconceptions. People should be prepared to change aspects of their behavior in exchange for learning and development. These can vary from person to person since learning certain skills may come across as easier to some but harder to others. Just because one must work hard to gain these does not mean it should serve as an excuse to not take it
