In this article, Liden, Wane, Liao, and Meuser examine servant leadership in relation to serving one's culture. “Servant leadership is based on the premise that leaders who are best able to motivate followers are those who focus least on satisfying their own personal needs and most on prioritizing the fulfillment of followers’ needs. Leaders who are more concerned about others than themselves are humble, and their humility stimulates strong relationships with followers and encourages followers to become fully engaged in their work” (Liden et al., 2014, p. 1434). Furthermore, “servant leadership consists of seven dimensions, including emotional healing or being sensitive to the personal setbacks of followers, creating value for the community, …show more content…

Likewise, “empathy and behaving ethically are aspects of servant leadership behavior that increase the attractiveness of servant leaders in the eyes of their follower” (Liden et al., 2014, p. 1436). After conducting their research Liden et al., find that “a positive relation between servant leadership and serving culture, indicating that there is a relationship between followers’ perceptions of their formal leaders’ servant leadership behaviors and their reports of the degree to which everyone employed within their store focuses on serving others.” (Liden et al., 2014, p. 1445). “Our results suggest that servant leadership impacts followers through a role modeling process and in turn, impacts interactions among all members of the unit. Consequently, servant leadership operates not only at the individual or dyadic level between the leader and follower but also through culture at the unit
