Youthful people do not know the difference between a lustful relationship and a loving relationship. They focus more on the looks than the qualities. In the tragic play Romeo and Juliet, the two “lovers” only thought they were in love. But, the affection between Romeo and Juliet was not genuine, rather it was lustful. To start off with, Romeo falls in love instantly when he sees Juliet. In the Capulet party, when Romeo sees Juliet, he is love struck. He says “For I ne’er saw true beauty till this night”. He thought that Rosaline was his “true love”. However, he thinks that Juliet is more attractive physically. Romeo sneaks into the Capulet part, and he sees Juliet. Juliet is only 13 years of age and Romeo is a couple years older. Juliet’s father, Lord Capulet, says “she hath not seen the change of fourteen years”. (1.2.9) Which means Juliet is 13 years of age and the she is not ready to get married yet. Even Lord Capulet admitted that Juliet was not ready to face the consequences and burdens of life. Both Romeo and Juliet are inexperienced. Romeo cherishes Juliet’s body and not her personality. Romeo is young, so young people tend to be more attracted to looks rather than personality. Romeo and Juliet are youthful; this means that they can not determine if the love they have is true. The “lovers” are adolescents and can not make big decisions by themselves. For example, Romeo forgets about his “true love” Rosaline within seconds after seeing Juliet. They were married in 2 days of seeing each other. The apparent lovers were still developing both physically and mentally. This factor was the leading force of the tragedy of Romeo and Juliet. Lastly, Romeo and Juliet did not consult their parents before making big decisions (i.e. marriage). In the play the two leading monarchs have a feud between each other. Every time a Capulet sees a Montague, they exchange atrocious words towards one another. Romeo and Juliet did not have the courage to confront their parents about their love. Instead, Romeo and Juliet took the biggest decision of their lives without consulting someone
