Superior Essays
Relationships are a key factor in the way individuals grow and mature. Whether the relationship is old and worn out or new and flourishing, there are lessons to be learned on the way. A relationship analysis is the best way to understand the dynamic of the relationship. It helps to make clear why the old relationship is worn out and why the new relationship is flourishing. A relationship analysis, if done correctly, can change the way the participants of the relationship communicate with one another which will either save or demolish the relationship being analyzed.

It refers to the tone of the relationship expressed by the verbal and nonverbal messages between people. Sometimes the communication climate can change drastically due to hurt feeling or a drastic change in tone. During my week of observation the communication climate changed drastically from the beginning of the week to the end of the week with what seems no reason at all. Sunday through Wednesday Malcolm and I were communicating efficiently there was little to no miscommunication. We would smile and hug showing our affection for one another. We had all the qualities of a positive communication climate. Yet on Thursday he was behaving differently. Malcolm took everything I said out of context. For example I told him he was silly for believing he could finish a one hundred question test in twenty minutes. He immediately got upset and stated he thought I was calling him stupid. He would then show nonverbal behaviors like sucking of teeth and sighs when I tried to talk to him. His change in actions and angry disposition changed the communication climate from a positive one to a negative …show more content…
In my relationship I noticed we use facts, opinions and feeling to self disclose. I believe we choose these three methods because of the households we were raised. Both households had parents who rarely self disclosed with their children leaving us to learn our own methods for self disclosure. Malcolm attempts to mask his self disclosure with his opinion on someone or something else for instance he states “I feel like no one should be called ugly” and then he proceeds to tell me that is where his insecurities came from as a young boy. Self disclosure is not always. Malcolm asked me on my birthday why I let my mother speak to me in such a harsh manner. At the time I was not prepared to self disclose. During this past week, I did not reveal any important information to my mom because I think there are more risk than benefits when opening up to my mom. For example, on Saturday I told my mom that I’ve been stressed out about school and work and have been thinking about taking a break. She says to me “so you’re a quitter now that’s what we do? Come on I knew you were lazy but I didn’t know you were a quitter” it seemed to me as if I made a negative impression on her, which is a risk to self-disclosing. Because I did not get the support I wanted from my mom, I always choose an alternative to self-disclosure which is silence.…

In the beginning of Roberta M. Gilberts textbook Extraordinary Relationships: A New Way of Thinking About Human Interactions (1992), she argues “In the realm of the purely personal - after food, water, and shelter - the quality of relationships most often determines the quality of life” (p. 3). I believe this statement perfectly sums up how vital and necessary human relationships are for human life, and the strong impact they play on having a positive and meaningful life. There were several concepts presented throughout chapters 1 - 12. They were each of equal importance and each greatly impacts the understanding of relationships. In order to have a purposeful life and a greater understanding of relationships, there are many crucial concepts that must be understood, three of them are differentiation of self, thinking systems, and the relationship pattern of cutoff.…

Self disclosure was previously seen as an unwanted element, and thought to be unnecessary in the relationship between the therapist and the client; however, this philosophy has changed because therapist were no longer seen as just a blank screen (Ornstein & Ganzer, 2005). One prominent incidence of self disclosure from Dr. Wachtel during his session with Melissa was at the end of their conversation. He stated that his concern was whether she had the freedom not remain the one who is different in the family, or as she labels, the “fun” one. While he was letting her know what he was thinking about her situation, he also avoided imposing any decisions on Melissa. This was similar to the times where he offered his thoughts about the connections he made between Melissa’s current situation and her experiences.…

To build upon Adler’s statement, since self disclosure requires a person to reveal information that is typically not shown to the public, once the person discloses that information it is possible that the consequences may become negative. A reason why people keep certain information away from others is to maintain their presenting self, which is an image of how they want others to view them as. Rejection, negative impression, decrease in relational satisfaction, loss of influence, and hurting others are risks of self disclosure. Throughout the entire week of thanksgiving I did not use any self disclosure styles. Self-disclosing can be very controversial because in some way and for some clients, it can be very helpful and therapeutic, however in other cases, it can be seen as a setback and can potentially harm the clients or endanger the therapeutic relationship. In Will’s case, as an observer, I think Sean’s self disclosure had help will in a sense that Sean had become a role model for Will concerning interpersonal and intimate relationships. During the course of therapy, Sean’s self disclosure had been more beneficial than harmful, however, it is my concern that Sean giving self disclosure to will was in fact him trying to heal his own pain.…
