Many times in the play we see people request darkness to commit an evil act. One of the most important instances of this is when Macbeth says "Stars, hide your fires/ let not light see my black and deep desires/ the eye wink at the hand/ yet let that be, which the eye fears, when it is done, to see" (1.4.50-53). This is Macbeth requesting…

The power of ambition is a central theme of this playwright as it represents how the characters of Lady Macbeth and Macbeth’s ambition for power drives them to sheer madness. Lady Macbeth’s characterisation is conveyed to be manipulative of Macbeth and it is Lady’s fatal flaw in her character for the ambition for power to get to her head, and thus leading herself and Macbeth into a tragic downfall which was commonly used by Shakespeare. The wheel of destiny is an important figure in this playwright as it determines the fortune of the characters, when the wheel is turned the characters are pushed up into a spur of the moment power for ambition, the wheel is turned again and thus the characters are facing the consequences of this, then finally the wheel is fully rotated and the characters have declined into their true downfall consequently by themselves. The use of iambic pentameter by Shakespeare with 10 syllables per line in Act 5 part 1, sets the overall tone of the poem. In this, Shakespeare use the witches to tell Macbeth small tidings of good, and riddles which he wrongly interprets. In this way, the Witches equivocate with Macbeth (and the audience) by stating a prophecy which sounds one way in literal terms, but actually has an entirely different meaning (such as the prophecy about Birnam Wood rising to Dunsinane…

She is surrounded by darkness which in this case represents the murky hell she is in. Judi Dench's performance is just outstanding, we can easily see Lady Macbeth's distress just through her facial expressions. Throughout Macbeth, setting has been a crucial aspect in the development of the plot. Shakespeare contrasts the setting to the events that occur there to highlight and create a separation between appearance and reality, bringing light to “fair is foul and foul is fair.” He also uses darkness as a setting to support unnatural and sinister occurrences as well as a means of disguise from goodness. Dating back to the beginning of time, evil has been thought to manifest itself in darkness, and it becomes a setting and crucial set piece because of its ability to create a foreboding sense of dread. Shakespeare uses setting to display various themes in the play such as the contrast between appearance and reality and natural and unnatural.…
