John and Elizabeth Proctor’s marriage evolves throughout the play. The Crucible is a love story at heart about Proctor’s adulterous relationship and overall betrayal towards his wife Elizabeth (Palmer). The couple goes through many obstacles throughout the play, that causes their relationship to go through many changes. John and Elizabeth’s relationship changes throughout the entire play in a positive direction. Elizabeth found out about John’s affair with Abigail Williams seven months prior to the beginning of the play. “Elizabeth insists that he is a good man, and this finally convinces him that he is”(Abbotson). She convinces him that he is a good person and he says “You have made your magic now, for now I do see some goodness in John Proctor”(Miller, Act IV, 144). Elizabeth told Proctor that no matter what happens she will always support him. She tells him that it is his soul and that it will over affect him in the end. She supported him and made sure to tell him that “As you will, I would have it” indicating that she will support him even if it means that she could lose him forever( Miller136). “Proctor to choose a dignified death rather than an ignoble betrayal by signing his name to a false document”(Abbotson 121). He chose to die instead of putting his family’s name on the line and bringing shame upon Elizabeth, his boys and his unborn child. “ Proctor’s ultimate refusal to accede to the confession indicates his awareness that he has a responsibility to himself and his community and that he would rather hang than participate in the false judgment of either”(Abbotson 122).this represents his integrity towards his family and refusal to do something that in which he was innocent of in order to show that he was innocent proving to Elizabeth and the rest of the world that they were happy and that their …show more content…
In a split second they go from arguing over John’s affair to defending each other in court. Their relationship and them evolve throughout the story which allows them to change. Every time a detail in their marriage changes tit always in a positive direction. They will do anything to protect each other. In the end Elizabeth says that “He has his goodness now.
