Although the two stories very different, the theme between them is actually very similar. This is the relationship between Hester and Chillingworth, and what his objective is throughout the story, and the relationship between Abigail and John Proctor, and what connects them throughout the story. In The Scarlet Letter, Hester Prynne is actually the wife of Chillingsworth. When Chillingsworth learns that Hester had cheated on him and had a baby with an unknown person in the community, he is outraged. Once it is revealed that the person Hester had the affair with is Dimmesdale, Chillingworth wants revenge and ends up torturing him. This shows that Chillingworth is a very vengeful person.
