Relationship Between Hamlet And Horatio

In the play, Hamlet by William Shakespeare (1603), there are all kind of characters. There are mean ones, inappropriate ones, caring ones, and much more. One specific character that’s very loveable and a great friend is Horatio. The main character, Hamlet, has a great relationship with Horatio. The way I’d describe their relationship, is with 8 simple words, “Action has a last spoken louder than words.”
First of all, Horatio is one of those guys that accepts the world no wonder how crazy it is and is faithful to everyone, ESPECIALLY Hamlet. Throughout the play, we seem to notice that they are very close friends and make a very strong bond or friendship. Obviously, Horatio is the only character that Hamlet trusts. He was the only one who knew for sure that Hamlet's madness was an act. Also, Horatio is technically Hamlet’s only “family.” In this way, Hamlet relies on Horatio, making the friendship closer and closer everytime. Throughout the play, at no point in any act, Horatio shows that he needs Hamlet. In contrast, Horatio is one class lower than Hamlet, a servant. He serves Hamlet with his rationality, emotional support, and loyalty. For some people, they call that relationship, “servitude.” If you haven’t

Hamlet trusts his friend enough that he left him a task of finding the words that will divine the truth. Finally, a question I asked myself throughout the play was if Horatio and Hamlet were possibly gay. Apparently, Shakespeare was often rumored to have homosexual tendencies and some of his sonnets were written about boys, so it is possible that Horatio possessed a romantic love for Hamlet, at least at some point. He was also the one person Hamlet confides in personally, and the one who said his last words upon his death. “Now cracks a noble heart. Good night sweet prince. And flights of angels sing thee to thy rest!” Those were Horatio’s last words to his buddy, best friend.

Horatio provides Hamlet with guidance and supports him until the moment of his demise. Using the character of Horatio, Shakespeare suggests that loyalty and support are qualities only provided by the best of friends and that these are qualities that cannot be found with ease in today’s world. Shakespeare exemplifies this rarity by ending the play with Horatio being the only real friend Hamlet has at the moment of his death. Despite the fact that Hamlet is surrounded by traitors; such as Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, former friends of Hamlet who have turned on him in favor of king Claudius, Horatio remains a true confidant who always presents his constructive thoughts to Hamlet with utmost thoughtfulness and care. Even if his ideas conflicted those of Hamlet’s, Horatio isn’t scared to question Hamlet’s rash actions.…

It is also evident here that Claudius is neither caring nor supportive, clarifying that he is prepared to sacrifice the relationship with his “son” in order to remain in control. The chaos that results from this conflict occurs for the duration of the play as both characters want to develop plans with the goal of removing each other from society. In addition, a conflict is established between Hamlet and Gertrude as a consequence to Claudius’ action of killing the previous King and becoming Gertrude’s new husband. The rivalry is first noticed when Hamlet questions his mother’s quick remarriage and how he is disappointed by her action. Hamlet states, “…You are the queen, your husband’s brother’s wife/…

Throughout Hamlet, family ties have a tendency to cause a ruckus in the kingdom of Denmark as well as around the world. The relation between fathers and sons in Hamlet might prove to be the most disastrous of these family ties. The three prominent father-son duos in this story are Polonius-Laertes, Fortinbras-old Fortinbras, and Hamlet-old Hamlet. As all characters do, these pairings all had some similar features as well as other stark differences in character. One such similarity was that all of these sons were commanded, either directly by their fathers or indirectly by assumptions about what their fathers would have wanted, to avenge their fathers’ deaths.…

When reading Hamlet, we see that relationships are essential in the storyline. The entire plot is actually based loosely off faulty relationships. When examining Act I, which is where the background is given, the baseline relationship is between King Hamlet and Gertrude. Many of the problems early on stem from the existence (and ending) of this relationship and “the weakness of this relationship may [have been] the downfall of everyone” (Johnson, 2005). The whole play is based off this broken marriage: starting with Hamlet’s motives for revenge and the events that follow.…

This is respect for not only Horatio 's intelligence but also his awareness. Another important quality hamlet has within his character is trust which he shows towards Horatio. There are two examples that display this; the first example is that he believes Horatio when Horatio states that “season your admiration for a while with an attent ear till I may deliver; upon the witness of these gentleman, this marvel to you.”…
