O’Connor didn’t give us any details regarding Manley’s illness, if he is true or not, therefore the reader can conclude that he is using this fact just to get close to Hulga, like he did when he told her that “ I like girls that wear glasses” (12) and when he asked her to show him her wooden leg, he said that “it’s what makes you different. She did believe in the existence of good and bad, right and wrong. The act of violence against Hulga returns her to the reality that there are other kind of people with other educations which she has missed, that out there aren’t only “good country people”. It has taken someone more cynical and evil than herself to make her aware of the truth. However, this experience it will be valuable for Hulga. She is still alive and she has a chance to change and the reader can think that probably she will be dramatically changed by this experience, she will become more humble and maybe she will return to Joy.
