As said by Britt Daniel, an American singer of the indie rock band Spoon, “Angel, my love, my first caress…I think all the years from your love I've been dispossessed” (Daniel). This lyric accurately describes the relationship between Shug Avery and Celie in the novel The Color Purple; the amount of love that Shug has towards Celie is something that Celie has never experienced, and it is something that she has been deprived of for her entire life. The relationship that forms between the two characters proves to have a strong impact on Celie’s life. Shug Avery’s role in Celie’s life aids in the development of Celie as a woman because Celie is protected from the abuse of her husband, becomes more independent, and her view of who God is is altered. …show more content…

Shug both indirectly and directly prevents Albert from beating Celie by simply being in the same house as Celie and by confronting Albert. Also, Shug gives Celie the confidence to leave Mister, as well as start her own business to earn a living for herself. Having Shug in her life completely changes Celie’s life from a life of unrelenting abuse and sadness to a life of self-assured happiness and

Love remains a frequent topic in literature because of the countless opportunities to explore emotions and to delve into the human psyche to ponder what truly causes someone to love another person. Furthermore, love is multifaceted, and Hawthorne focuses on a different aspect of love within a relationship in each of his two stories. Although “The Birth-Mark” and “The Minister’s Black Veil” both contain elements of Puritan society, delineate the relationship between a man and his partner, and consider how far love can drive a person, each story examines a different kind of love that a man and a woman have for each other. Georgiana unconditionally loves Aylmer in the same way that Mr. Hooper unconditionally loves Elizabeth, but both of their respective partners, Aylmer and Elizabeth, conditionally love them and fixate upon a single, minute detail, the birthmark and the veil, which they perceive…

The poets, Gwen Harwood, Geoff Goodfellow and Judith Wright, all explore the idea of “individuals and those they love” using imagery and form. Through female perspectives, each poet presents how loving another person can cause a conflict of interests, between wanting a fulfilling relationship and the inevitable pain and suffering that accompanies it. Imagery is used to illustrate how daily hardships can overpower an individual’s ability to love people close to them, resulting in conflicted emotions. In both In the Park and Suburban Sonnet, Harwood explores how women can lead mundane and unfulfilling lifestyles following motherhood. In In the Park, the woman loses passion and self-identity, as evidenced by her “out of date” clothing and an almost…
