In “ The Bell Of Justice” the beginning shows the horse and captain being alike and being best friends but as life went on they became farther apart like a roller coaster ride. They had first been up and happy and then they eventually started falling down and down until the towns people helped them start riding back up into their journey of being best friends. The relationship status between the captain and the horse was an unstable one because they had some high’s and low’s where they went from friends to strangers. In the passage “Darcy and Clara” Tom and Darcy are in a relationship and their date goes awkwardly where someone may think they are mad or not right for each other, but it is the opposite. Composers often transform texts to adapt them in a way considered to be more suitable for a desired audience and to convey new meaning. Jane Austen’s 1815 novel, Emma, has been transformed in Amy Heckerling’s 1995 film, Clueless for a modern Western teenage audience. Emma and Clueless both stand as reflections of their time; that of Regency England and postmodern America respectively. While the general plot line remains, Heckerling has adapted the refined country setting of Highbury, England to the fast-paced and commercialised society of twentieth century California, to reveal the changes in attitudes, values and beliefs over time, particularly in regards to the perception of marriage, social stature and propriety as well as the role of women…

Fitzwilliam Darcy must find a way to gain love from Elizabeth Bennet without his pride getting in the way, but he just cannot do it. As Mr. Darcy goes to propose to Elizabeth “She could easily see that he had no doubt of a favorable answer”. This shows his pride getting in the way of love because he already expect an answer that is to his liking without thinking of how Elizabeth really feels about him (loathes him at this point!). Darcy lets his pride in the way of many things and Elizabeth clearly states that she would have liked him better if he had “behaved in a more gentlemanlike manner” and did not insult her along with her family while he proposed to her. Darcy is also very conceited which adds to his pride, he believes that Elizabeth…

In Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen, the relationships between characters show different views on how and why partnerships are developed in the 1800’s. Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy’s relationship is established on honesty and love while the bond between Jane Bennet and Mr. Bingley is built on love and companionship. In contrast, the marriage of Charlotte Lucas and Mr. Collins is one created by societal pressures. Based on the three relationships discussed, I believe Jane Austen saw Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy as well as Jane Bennet and Mr. Bingley as the ideal types of relationships between people. Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy’s relationship starts off as an interest that turns into a bond and eventually into love.…

After applying to colleges, you wait impatiently to receive a letter notifying you of the colleges’ verdict, everyday you’d rush to check your mailbox, only to be disappointed, and seemingly more anxious than before. It does not necessarily have to be a letter from a college, it could be your first paycheck that is taking longer to arrive than you anticipated, or a letter from the IRS that can either bring joy or dread depending on the context of the letter. Ironically even though our daily life is becoming more and more reliant on advanced technology, letters still effect our daily life significantly. Before the Internet and telephone, the most common form of distant communication was letters. One would wait several weeks or months to receive…

Geoffrey Chaucer’s “The Canterbury Tales’ are some of the greatest works in literature. He takes thirty-one different characters of a pilgrimage and tells their stories from his perspective. He uses some of his characters as allegories or interpreted with hidden meanings. Two of the tales that are similar yet different are The Knight’s Tale and The Squire’s Tale. These two tales have the same underlying theme but the tone and saturation are different in their own respects.…

Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet Although Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet were not interested in each other at the beginning of the story, the courtship between Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet in Pride and Prejudice is similar to the courtship between Fred Vincy and Mary Garth in Middlemarch because it required the characters to evolve before they could be together. Mr. Darcy, specifically, had to change and prove his worthiness to Elizabeth Bennet the same way Fred Vincy had to prove his worthiness to Mary Garth. Mr. Darcy left a negative first impression on Elizabeth during the ball when she overheard him remark to Mr. Bingley that he did not want to dance with her or any of the women at the ball for that matter (Austen Chapter 3). Elizabeth’s…
