Compare And Contrast Parenting Styles And Delinquency

Upon reviewing literature on parenting styles and delinquency, it becomes apparent that existing literature engages extensively with Diana Baumrind’s concepts of parenting styles (Baumrind, 1991). There exists two distinct components of parenting, primarily the parental responsiveness and parental demandingness. Parental responsiveness refers to the support and care by a parent, while parental demandingness refers to behavioural control patterns such as supervision and discipline (Baumrind, 1991). Additionally, parenting patterns were distinguished by four categories, authoritative, authoritarian, permissive and uninvolved/neglecting. Authoritarian parenting revolved around low responsiveness and high demandingness, often times relying on heavy use of punishment and compliance (Alizabeh, Mansor, Abdullah, & Mansor, 2011). Permissive parenting involved high responsiveness with low demandingness, meaning less regulation of behaviours and low levels of control. The final category, features low responsiveness and low demandingness and a general disengagement from child rearing responsibilities (Hoskins, 2014). The level and form of delinquency was also sorted into two definitions, externalizing and internalizing problems. Externalizing problems is characterized as outright actions such as violence, rebellion, drug abuse, and forms of external deviance.
