Relational Art

Art is a diverse concept known throughout the entire world. It causes much controversy over the subject matter and what makes it considered art. Art can be very simple but also at times can be very complex, it can last a lifetime or even just a day. It can be a physical object or painting or it can be performance based. Artists are full of imagination, emotion, creativity, and most of all passion. Passion is what drives the artist to create the work and propel it forward into success. In this class we talk a lot about art that is used to help our community in positive ways. We even did a project on that subject. Relational Art can be many things, it can be the sweater you knit and give to charity or it can be the doodle you created as a stress reliever for your co-workers. It is called relation art because it is art that has to connect to the community, something that would relate to them and help them through their everyday stress. It also doesn’t have to be necessarily all positive. We also discussed some street or public artists who sometimes made murals or even just did graffiti. As an artist we believe it is up to us to push the boundaries of these so called norms. Marcel Duchamp chose to push the boundaries of what is considered art. He decided to take something that was already created for normal everyday use and turn it into art without modifying it in any way other than putting a name on it. At first the idea and creation of this was rejected. They art society at the time did not believe they could consider that art due to the fact that he did not create it.
