After the film had aired, both Theo van Gogh and Hirsi Ali received thousands of death threats, which resulted in the murder of Theo Van Gogh and the seclusion of Hirsi Ali. According to some scholars, Theo van Gogh’s troubled history with the Muslim community justified the leaders blaming the film that for spreading Islam phobia. Theo van Gogh was a well-known Dutch filmmaker/author and is the great grand nephew of the famous painter Vincent van Gogh. Unfortunately, Theo van Gogh was not famous for his well written books or inspiring documentaries but rather for his controversial outspoken opinions on Muslims, Jews and Christians or as I say the “former Donald Trump” of his time.…
In this essay I will discuss the ways that Vincent Van Gogh’s, The Night Cafe, 1888 was used as influence for Ernest Ludwig Kirchner’s, Street, Dresden, 1908. To prove my point I will provide visual analyzations of the pieces, some background to the artists and the art movements they were associated with, and events that happened around the time the paintings were created that affected many artists and the work they created. Vincent Van Gogh’s painting, Night Cafe, depicts a scene a cafe with four empty tables as well as three with people seated at them. There is a green pool table at the center of the room that casts a large orange shadow onto the yellow floor. There is a man with neon green hair in a yellow suit standing to the right of…
The essay written by S.I. Hayakawa “What It Means to Be Creative” went over many aspects that are seen in Van Gogh. Van Gogh was a famous painter from about 1888 to current, seeing as his paintings are still sought after to this very day. He was also famous for cutting off his own ear. Through his letters to his brother Theo he has given us a look into his life, in addition we see the pain and suffering, as well as the joy he went through from day to day. In the Hayakawa essay he named numerous aspects of a creator which you will see Van Gogh follows a number of these examples.…
Saint Thomas was born in Galilee, Israel, and was one of the twelve Apostles. Whilst a dedicated follower of Jesus, he earned the title of “doubting Thomas” on the first Easter Sunday simply because he did not believe Jesus had risen from the dead. According to John 20:24-29, Thomas had not been with the other disciples when Jesus appeared to them, and was in doubt when they told him that Jesus had returned. It wasn’t until Jesus appeared to Thomas and had him touch the fatal wounds did Thomas believe His Resurrection was true. Throughout history, many artists have depicted this moment between Christ and Saint Thomas through various mediums such as paintings, sculptures, and films.…
Art reflects life: as society and its institutions change, art remains as a record of historical thoughts and practices. The way in which society views and treats those suffering with mental illness varies depending on the contemporary theory for its cause and its place among society. As man progressed from the superstitious dogma on mental illness surrounding the Medieval period, theories and cures towards mental illness increased in their analytic methods, though it certainly took centuries to overcome the stigma surrounding it. Albrecht Dürer’s Melancholia I (Figure 1), William Hogarth’s A Rake’s Progress: The Madhouse (Figure 2), and Vincent van Gogh’s Self Portrait with Bandaged Ear and Pipe (Figure 3) reflect their period’s treatment…
Art’s visit with his psychiatrist, Pavel, displays a prominent example of the guilt Art felt towards his family and history. His psychiatrist tells Art, “Maybe your father needed to show that he was always right – that he could always SURVIVE – because he felt GUILTY about surviving. And he took his guilt on YOU,…
To feel alone, completely, and utterly alone, can be a crushing sensation. It can destroy a person from the inside out, and drive them completely mad. And if you couple that with being confined, you have a formula that can only conclude in disaster. In The Painted Door, through Ann, we see that when one feels neglected, trapped, and alone, it can drive a person to do things outside of their normal behavior. And if one gives into cravings, consequences that may not have been imagined could be brought to fruition.…
-Picasso - D - Hannah Park - I really like the contrast between colors and how saturated the work is. She shown a very good impression of Picasso's work. -Van Gogh - A - David Eisenstadt - He expressed the same technique used by Van Gogh and how the colors give each other a set of value to create shading. I really like the texture that was given to the hair and the details of the face. -De…
Recently opened in the Lower East Side of Manhattan, Understanding Human Loneliness, analyzes the discrepancy between internal isolation and external being. Located in an empty warehouse, Understanding Human Loneliness features only two works: Le Déjeuner sur l’herbe by Edouard Manet and Triptych, Left Panel by Paula Rego. The two works are vastly different – Rego’s piece features bright colors and jarring imagery while Manet’s piece employs subdued colors and less narrative – but evoke a similar sense of longing and need for attention. Through the cold atmosphere of the warehouse and the tension found in both paintings, Understanding Human Loneliness makes the guests question the helplessness of life. Art exhibits in modern enclosures are far from a new phenomenon, yet Understanding Human Loneliness brings about a new sense of emptiness and openness.…
Text A is a letter, sent out by the St. Mungo’s Broadway charity. The purpose of the text is to not only inform the reader of the poor living conditions that homeless people are faced with everyday and what you can do to help both those in need and St. Mungo’s Broadway themselves, but also to persuade the individual to give as much as they can to aid the cause and better a person’s life. The use of a letter makes the inclusion of personal pronouns, such as “you” and “we”, feel more directed at the reader, as though the letter was addressed solely to them, almost forcing them to feel responsible to provide for the charity and in turn, the many more homeless people “like Harvey” discussed in the text. However, certain key words may have been…

breaking free from confinement or control, even the failing to be noticed or remembered are both Munch and Van Gogh's strengths, yet weaknesses. One could generalize that the preface of ones mean to escape is by hiding what's really happening within, essentially running away from it. Who is Van Gogh?…

Self Absorbed Humanity (An analysis of the messages from Musée des Beaux Arts by W. H. Auden) “The rise of selfishness was apparently irreversible” (Star). Indeed, modernity has many faults, one being selfishness, and it is on the rise. Not only in the United States, but the whole world’s population, is comprised of very egotistical individuals. Only caring about what happens to them, what their needs are. The modern individual has the mindset of it’s not my problem, or out of sight out of mind, Which, is not benevolent or the correct way one should view the sufferings/burdens of the world and others.…
Logotherapy is a term derived from “logos,” a Greek word that translates as “meaning,” and therapy, which is defined as treatment of a condition, illness, or maladjustment. Logotherapy was developed by neurologist and psychiatrist Viktor Frankl. He, in his book man, search for meaning has outlined as for how his theory helped him to get through the time at Nazis concentration camps and how his this experience later developed and reinforced and strengthened his theories. This therapy not only helps people to discover the purpose of their existence but also helps the individual to find “why” to his existence.…
