Knight’s family was very poor. The rooms at her house were always filled with her cousins, or siblings, ,which made it hard for her to even find a place to sleep. “I didn’t have a bedroom that was just mine. My cousins and I were always being switched into different rooms. Where are you sleeping tonight? one of my aunts once asked me. I dont know. I Told her.I’ll just find a spot” (Knight 8). Knight never received any privacy, and couldn’t sleep comfortably. Along with poor sleeping conditions, Michelle rarely was able to keep adequate hygiene. “Sometimes we were able to brush our teeth. Other times, not really.When we could, we did, and that was probably about twice a week. The inside of my mouth always felt grimy and sticky” (Knight 10). This caused Michelle to not only feel terrible on the outside,but also on the inside when children at school would torment her because of the way she smelled and looked. When Knight was very young, a man from her family sexually assaulted her. “I was so scared. All I could do was try to hold back the noise from crying. Afterward I lay there feeling dirty and all alone” (Knight 9). Knight states that she did not know exactly who the man was, only that he was part of
