Reinforcement And Extinction Paper

Schedule of Reinforcement and Extinction Reinforcement is very important for the shaping the behavior and some responses because leads less variable of the unrelated behavior and responses. However, the shaped behavior and responses are affected by the extinction because some of behavior and responses are not working without the reinforcement.
In this experiment, we focused on how the schedule of reinforcement made some effects to the response during reinforcement and extinction phase. The rate of the reinforcement is associated with the behavioral momentum theory which is the resistance to the change. Craig, Cunningham, & Shahan (2015) suggest that higher resistance to the effect of the extinction is associated with higher rate of the reinforcement

The chamber is enclosed in the left side in an audio-light-attenuating box. The box has two fans on the left side and the back of the wall. Left and right sides are made of aluminum and the front and back walls of the chamber are made with the clear plastic. The house light is positioned 1 cm from the ceiling of the chamber, and is centrally located. On the upper right sidewall of the chamber which is 2 cm below the ceiling, the response key (5cm wide × 7cm height), which consists of 6 plastic plates, is positioned. The food hopper (6cm wide × 4.8cm height), is located 9 cm below the response key and 5cm above the mesh steel grid floor, and set on the lower right sidewall of the chamber. Hopper light is set on the top of the chamber opening. The mesh steel grid, which is 5cm below the food hopper opening, is made by the aluminum. The screen to present the stimulus is presented from behind the response key, and is located on the right side of the audio-light-attenuating box. The timing and the recording of the data are controlled by the …show more content…
In the extinction phase, we measured that the rates of responses at the first 1 minute and at the last 1 minute of the extinction phase, and were declined in all of schedules; especially the extinction phase of FR-40 (FREXT) presented the noticeable results. However, the amount number of responses during the extinction phase of DRL-7s (DRLEXT) was higher than during the DRL-7s phase, whereas the amount number of responses during FREXT was lower than during FR-40 phase, which means that DRL-7s phase had a strong resistance to the effect of extinction because the pigeon was still pecking during DRLEXT phase, even though did not during FREXT. Also, I suggest that the PREE, which means that the partial reinforcement has stronger resistance to the effect of extinction interval than other reinforcements, like continuous reinforcement, was happening in the experiment because DRL schedule had more resistant to the effect of the extinction, whereas FR schedule did not have resistant to the effect of the extinction. Moreover, this experiment indicates that the difference of reinforcement schedule is associated with the characteristics of the behavioral momentum because these effects were presented in the extinction phase. The FR schedule was not resistance to the effect of the extinction, but the amount numbers of

The control room is staffed by two operators, at each of the two ‘stations’ within the control room. There is also one external station situated behind the control room, capable of viewing the screens through the glass wall. The stations are positioned in such a way that when the operator is sitting, the lower quarter of the screen wall is obscured by the displays on their desks. The operator therefor is limited in the amount of information provided to the when they are in the sitting position, and rely only on the system to alert them if anything out of the ordinary…

In the data table, each of the stimuli, including the control group without a stimulus, will be written in the left hand column under the title “stimulus”. Next to the stimulus column, there will be three columns titled “number of mealworms in stimulus chamber after 1 minute”, “number of mealworms in stimulus chamber after 2 minutes”, and “number of mealworms in stimulus chamber after 3 minutes”. Under each of the three columns relating to the minutes passed, the corresponding data will be collected for each stimulus. The control group is when no stimuli will be placed in the chamber opposite the mealworms and the number of mealworms in the chamber where there was no stimulus will be collected. The constants in the experiment are the…

Before Jorge and his wife tried to use negative reinforcement techniques by putting him in stressful situations, if he doesn’t correct his behavior. This technique did not help them at all. So they decided to go with Extinction principle. However, we think that it 's more about positive reinforcement than extinction principle as they promised him to buy a car for his son if he stayed in college and complete his education without dropping off. Now measuring against the base rate Jorge son is focused on studies and basketball in college level.…

Extinction initially was conceptualized as a process in which original learning, and therefore behavior, was unlearned or destroyed. That is, it was assumed that extinguished behavior would no longer be elicited by the environmental cues that originally evoked it. However, extensive research shows that extinction does not involve unlearning, but rather new learning that does not overwrite the original learning. Furthermore, the physical environment and social context in which extinction takes place, as well as such internal states as emotions, drug-related states, and time, will influence the process of extinction. Every day we are getting closer to the edge of the extinction, getting addicted to something instead of being free.…

It requires removal of the stimulus that the subject has learned to associate with their behavior. In classical conditioning, this involves presenting the conditioned stimulus without the presence of the unconditioned stimulus. This does not entirely obliterate the association, it only weakens the conditioned response. If the conditioned stimulus is presented days later with the addition of the unconditioned stimulus, then spontaneous recovery may occur (Kowalski & Westen, 2011). In operant conditioning, extinction involves the removal of the reinforcement, positive or negative.…

A study done in 2005 by Rau, Decola, and Fanselow developed a different model in which the basis was fear conditioning and defensive behaviors. In situations where danger is present, humans and other animal are focused on the immediate danger. These situations tend to be dominated by fear and limit the responses that can be made to protect the organism. So in order to be truly adaptive fear, stress, and defense reactions must be rapidly activated when necessary as well as appropriate to the situation, this fear must be regulated. Understanding the appropriate responses and regulation of fear also allows us to understand when fear is not appropriately regulated.…

The experiment had four conditions. In condition one, pigeons will be trained to respond to a key (Key 1) using a single variable interval (VI) 30 s schedule. In the condition 2, Key 1 will be placed on EXT and the pigeons will be trained to respond to a new key (Key 2) using a VI 30s schedule. In condition 3, both Key 1 and Key 2 will be placed on EXT and subjects will be trained to respond to a third key (Key 3) using a VI 30 schedule. In the fourth and final condition, all three keys will be placed on EXT, thus we want to know which key or session the pigeon will turn its behaviour to and where the resurgence effect…

Everyone has experienced classical conditioning and may not even know it. A common example is food: you ate something that made you sick and now you never eat it; you’re conditioned against the food because you had a bad reaction. In the most simple terms, classical conditioning or Pavlovian conditioning is learning a new behavior with different stimuli that create a reaction that can be repeated numerously through a recurring experiment. This kind of conditioning is seen in Aldous Huxley's Brave New World, and goes along with the theme, psychological conditioning is potentially dangerous, which I agree with.…

Throughout any day of ones life they make decisions that can impact the future for them and others, but is there determinism or free will behind the choices? In life many will make decisions that they feel are their own free will and some will make decisions and say it was a result of the environment they are in and that due to something that previously happened to them was a result in their purposeful choice or intention. Determinism is something that everyone lives with on a daily basis and shows how the environment has had influence on one’s live. Determinism is the doctrine that all events, including human action, are ultimately determined by causes external to the will. Using determinism is something that is used in the process of making the choice, however it is something that usually cannot be controlled by a person before the action takes place.…

Reinforcement is a concept that has been defined throughout history and specifically a term that was coined when the operant conditioning theory was introduced. Early theorists in the far past were giving broad explanations as to what they believed was the process in which we learn new information. Later in the recent past psychologists were providing reinforcement theories, specifically the operant conditioning theory. This theory has everything pertaining to reinforcement which were more grounded on experimental work using animals. Today, we are not so much focusing on how to define reinforcement in terms of motivation, but rather hypothesizing about the application and contexts of reinforcement schedules.…
