During the French Reign of Terror, a period of time September 5th, 1793, to July 27th, 1794, resulted in the executions of 16,594 people by guillotine and an estimated 25,000 people by summary executions, ("Reign of Terror | French History." Encyclopedia Britannica Online). The Reign of Terror occurred after the fall of the French Monarchy. Instituted by Maximilien Robespierre, tens of thousands of political enemies, royalists, and those who opposed the revolution were executed. After the fall of Louis XVI, France established the Committee of Public Safety. Eventually, Maximilien Robespierre dominated this committee and executed anyone who opposed the French revolution. Created on April 6th, 1793, the Committee of Public Safety’s main goal was to protect France from all enemies, both one the home front and abroad, to keep a close eye on the French government, and make decisions in times of emergency ("Committee of Public Safety." Encyclopedia Britannica Online). Originally headed by revolutionary Georges Jacques Danton, the power of members of the Committee were balanced, and the Committee itself did not exercise the dictatorial powers it soon would. With widespread success in most aspects, the Committee of Public Safety would gain the trust of the National Convention and the citizens in a small group of men, becoming more influential and dominant ("The Committee of Public Safety."
