Rehabilitation Counselor Reflective Essay

My journey to becoming a rehabilitation counselor started with watching and working with some very dedicated individuals who inspired me. As I worked with these individuals I noticed the special traits they possessed. This in turn made me question myself as to whether or not I possessed the similar traits. As I have gone through this self-exploration process I ask myself. Am I dedicated and compassionate? Do I possess strong communication and problem solving skills? These were the traits I witnessed in those individuals who inspired me to pursue the vocation of rehabilitation counselor. My answer was yes, I believe that these are traits I possess. Some people may look at this as a negative, but I feel that having this responsibility gave me a strong work ethic and understanding of responsibility. With that being said, I can see where these traits could impact my understanding of what it means to have a good work ethic, be a responsible and independent person. I need to always be aware that I could easily project my understanding of the meaning of these traits onto a client. One way I may do this is if I feel a client is being uncooperative or dragging their feet about selecting a vocational goal, I may perceive them as being lazy. I may feel that they do not want to take on the responsibility of doing the tasks necessary to find and maintain employment. When in fact the reasons that they may be hesitant about selecting a goal or show reluctance toward interviewing may be due to various other reasons. These may include lack of knowledge about how to research for jobs or anxiety regarding interviewing. It will be important that I explore and determine their reluctance or resistance and not assume the cause based on my
