Rehabilitation Counselor Case Study

Running head: PSYCHOLOGICAL 2 As a rehabilitation counselor in attending an individualized educational plan on Michael’s behalf I would suggest that it is very important since he is deaf to provide notes of the key elements of the classroom material and discussion that could be taken by another classmate or by a hired paraprofessional note taker. The reason why is that students with hearing loss are unable to overhear the teacher’s full discussion surrounding them, which can result into gaps in their academic skills. Michael should be allowed extra time in processing his classroom material this accommodation to ensure he is understanding the learning material completely. The support may be provided within the classroom, where the helper would co-teach or work with the deaf or hard of hearing student in conjunction with the main teacher addressing the entire class, or Michael meet with a specialist after class, outside of the classroom. Michael has expressed a lot of interest in sport’s such as baseball and football which could be a future vocational goal for is to be a coach. He could go to college and earn his bachelor degree in physical education to achieve teacher certification to become a middle or a high school level coach. Three barriers that might affect Michael in seeking gainful employment would be communication, and other employee’s my not be fluent in American Sign Language. The final barrier could be providing Michael an interpreter to communicate with other employee’s. Some counseling strategies to help Michael overcome these barriers would be to prepare him for the working environment in what he might encounter. As a vocational rehabilitation counselor I
