Nursing today, is far different than how nursing was practiced years ago, and with the ever changing healthcare, such as the Affordable Care Act (ACA) that was signed into law by President Obama in 2010, and the Institute of Medicine (IOM) report The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health, together is taking healthcare, and the professions, such as nursing to greater heights and expectations by transforming “its health care system to provide seamless, affordable, quality care that is accessible to all, patient centered, and evidence based and leads to improved health outcomes” (Institute of Medicine, 2010) . In order to achieve this, the IOM offers recommendations which include “(1) ensure that nurses can practice to the full extent of their education and training, (2) improve nursing education, and (3) provide opportunities for nurses to assume leadership positions and to serve as full partners in health care redesign” (Institute of Medicine, 2010).

Developing strong leadership skills is a competency that begins in nursing school and one must continue to broaden on as a nurse. “Nurses should be full partners, with physicians and other health professionals” (Institute of Medicine, 2010), to be a voice and a part of a transformed health care system. Not only should nurses be leaders within the health care organization, but also build new “partnerships with other clinicians, business owners, philanthropists, elected officials, and the public” (Institute of Medicine, 2010) to help bring awareness to change in the healthcare system. Nurses today can be a part of the decision making in order to bring about change, implement action which is necessary to “increase quality, access, and value” (Institute of Medicine, 2010) to help in the delivery of patient-centered
