Developing strong leadership skills is a competency that begins in nursing school and one must continue to broaden on as a nurse. “Nurses should be full partners, with physicians and other health professionals” (Institute of Medicine, 2010), to be a voice and a part of a transformed health care system. Not only should nurses be leaders within the health care organization, but also build new “partnerships with other clinicians, business owners, philanthropists, elected officials, and the public” (Institute of Medicine, 2010) to help bring awareness to change in the healthcare system.
